Looking for suggestions on players CB irons to try

Hi All,

As the season winds down I am thinking about what CB irons I can try for next year. I currently play a mixed set of Wilson Staff CB irons 4-6 and 2018 Apex MB irons 7-GW. Apex MBs have been in the bag for 3 seasons. My back up irons are Bridgestone J33 CBs as well as the Apex MB irons up to 3 iron.

I want a 34 to 35 degree 7 iron, forged construction, not a fan of floating faces and soft feel like the Apex 18 MB, Wilson, Bridgestone or Mizuno. A thin sole with some heel relief is a must.  I’m fine with tungsten weights. Titleist CBs are just about perfect except I don’t like the way they feel, too hard for me. Yes even out of the middle😀.

My current list to try includes: Mizuno MP 18 SC, MP 20 MMC, MP 63 or 64, JPX tour 919 or 921, Wilson Staff V6, Taylormade P7-MC and Bridgestone J38 CB or DPC and J40 DPC irons, Cobra King forged CB/MB. Am I missing anything?

What I have tried already, Titleist 716 CB (loved every thing but the feel), Titleist 716 AP2, Callaway 16 Apex Pro, 21 X forged, New Level PF2 and 623 CB, MacGregor MT pro c/m combo, Miura 1957 CB/MB001 combo set. The Miura set was really nice and I kind of regret selling them.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions

I've played both Wilson/Staff V6s and CBs. CBs are a little shorter blade length and chunkier top line. If you want more traditional styling then the V6s are the way to go. Both are amazingly smooth though.

They're not going to be as soft as some of the others you've listed, but I found the 620 CB slightly softer than the 716 CB (really all the 7 series). Still might not work for you, but could be worth at least kicking the tires.

No mention of the Srixon 7 series???  Must try.  Though I did just pick up some Mizuno Pro 223.  They seem to have real potential to be great.

Gotta give the srixons a shot. I have the 785s and i love them. these are the first "players" iron i've owned, but everything i've read about the zx7s seems like they're maybe even better and could be getting a discount soon

I have been doing some research on the different tour stage irons just trying to figure out which ones are best to target. I love that endo forged feel.

Agreed with this!  I am so happy I kept my set and didn't offload when I got my Cobra MB's and P7MB.

Thanks for the input. I will give the 620 CBs a try next time I stop by my local golf shop. They are great looking irons.

I have the MP18 SC's... they aren't any easier to hit than a MB.

Thanks, I may take them off the list. They were in the competition with the 2018 Apex MBs, MP 18 MBs and 716 AP2s when I finally stopped playing my Tommy Armour V31 irons after 19 years. Chose the AP2s for extra forgiveness and quickly switched to the Apex MBs. Liked both of the MP18 irons. Had hoped the SC would provide some additional forgiveness.

Favorite Iron ever and it's not close. Old CG2's only thing can compare them to. P7MB just not the same. Z forged blades were fun too but the shape of P750 and sole is everything I've ever wanted in mid/short irons. Still have a Srixon 785 4 iron though.

I've read a lot of great things about the ZX5 and ZX7 irons.  If I decide to upgrade, ZX5s are definitely on my short list.

Perhaps because the Mk. II versions of both those and the ZX5 just hit the USGA Conforming list?

The NLs intrigue me.  I'm seriously considering ordering a 623 CB demo iron.

So far this season I've went thru, z785, zx5, zx7, apex 19, j40 DPC. Currently in the bag are the bridgestone tour b x cb. Really been digging the feel of these paired with modus 120 in x flex. They do come in alittle strong on the lofts for what you are after. The J40 DPC made it almost the whole summer and I honestly regret selling them. I'd take a real hard look at those.

The MP18SC are pretty widely acknowledged as being pretty meh. To the point that you might as well play the MBs (which I do). The MP20MMCs were a much better successor and the MP223 even more so.

921 Tour might be worth a look if you don't mind the tech, but its not as soft.

923 Tour I believe adds the copper underlay (releases next spring) which would make it feel softer.

Srixon and the current Wilson CBs are also very soft and worth a try.

i second the Mp20 MMC.  Great feeling clubs.  Also the JPX Tour models are very good - the 919 are my favourites.  I know you don't want a stronger lofted set of irons but you really should try the Mizuno 223 and maybe get them bent a degree or so weaker/

Indeed. And to be honest, seems like Srixon irons on the secondary market can be had for decent prices too

You would love the Miura CB-501 if you can find a mint set. Almost no offset. Thin top line and sole. Feel incredible. I think these are exactly what you are looking for.

i have the CB57/MB001 combo set as well… the CB501 are a little thinner sole and top line with less offset than the 57.

TC - 201 are worth a try as well. You can blend the MB101 with them.

Check our the new MC-502 from Miura as well. They are muscle cavity. Insane forgiveness for being a blade design.

inam like you, titlest just doesn’t hit on the feel category for me.

921 tours have a nice thin sole and are very smooth through impact.  Surprisingly forgiving and get great ball speed.  Really curious about the 923 tours.

I wish cobra would re-release the chrome cb’s.  Those were pretty great!

If you can find a set, give the Honma 747v or tr20 a shot.  Some of the best looking and feeling irons.  A little strong lofted, but easy to bend.

They’re not the most fashionable but don’t miss the chance to test the Wilson cb’s. They will take some beating especially so if price is a factor

I bought a new set of the Wilson FG Tour V6 irons for $1000 when they came out and eventually moved them on. Just picked up a used set 4-GW here on the forum for $225. Regripped and cleaned up and they’re sweet. I forgot how soft they feel and how forgiving they are considering their size. Very traditional lofts and super consistent. A bit of Tungsten in the long irons for some added help. Even the 4 iron is easy to hit. Highly recommended and most used sets are around $300.
