Looking for suggestions on players CB irons to try

seeing as you are already in Callaway clubs, well half at least, why not give either the outgoing model or soon to be released model of Apex TCB a look?

looking around the forum most people here rave about them, i have hit the fitting 7i only with LS Project X as the demo shaft close to what i would use, and while PX 6.0 is a real struggle for me to swing nicely when i middled the club it felt very very nice.

if you are currently gaming 18 MB slotting into TCB should be quite smooth transition.

Hi All,

As the season winds down I am thinking about what CB irons I can try for next year. I currently play a mixed set of Wilson Staff CB irons 4-6 and 2018 Apex MB irons 7-GW. Apex MBs have been in the bag for 3 seasons. My back up irons are Bridgestone J33 CBs as well as the Apex MB irons up to 3 iron.

I want a 34 to 35 degree 7 iron, forged construction, not a fan of floating faces and soft feel like the Apex 18 MB, Wilson, Bridgestone or Mizuno. A thin sole with some heel relief is a must.  I’m fine with tungsten weights. Titleist CBs are just about perfect except I don’t like the way they feel, too hard for me. Yes even out of the middle😀.

My current list to try includes: Mizuno MP 18 SC, MP 20 MMC, MP 63 or 64, JPX tour 919 or 921, Wilson Staff V6, Taylormade P7-MC and Bridgestone J38 CB or DPC and J40 DPC irons, Cobra King forged CB/MB. Am I missing anything?

What I have tried already, Titleist 716 CB (loved every thing but the feel), Titleist 716 AP2, Callaway 16 Apex Pro, 21 X forged, New Level PF2 and 623 CB, MacGregor MT pro c/m combo, Miura 1957 CB/MB001 combo set. The Miura set was really nice and I kind of regret selling them.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions

Do yourself a favor and try the Srixon stuff.

I had the z785 last year and changed to the Z-Forged blade this year. Not much difference TBH. Both feel superior to the Titleist stuff and are shockingly stable on imperfect strikes.

Lots of scratch guys switching to Srixon these days! 😉

I have always liked the feel of the Srixon 765/85 irons but don’t like the lofts and loft progression. Just seems like there would be a gaps as you move towards the PW. Do you have any trouble with gaps?

They're not going to be as soft as some of the others you've listed, but I found the 620 CB slightly softer than the 716 CB (really all the 7 series). Still might not work for you, but could be worth at least kicking the tires.

+1. I don’t find the 620 CB’s any “harder” than my previous Mizuno MP-69s.

I’ll throw another vote in for Srixon, based on my experience.  I play an Apex MB 2018 combo set and Z785/585/U85 combo at different points in the year. There is certainly an adjustment in expected distance & spin going from one to the other.  I don’t find the 785 particularly more forgiving than Apex MB, because the MBs are just so dang good.  If you’re really that concerned about loft progression, get them bent 1-2° weak.

I don’t have any trouble gapping 785s on the wedge side; the Srixon A wedge is also 51°.  I actually prefer it in every way to the Apex MB A wedge, much more versatile around the green.  From PW to mid irons, the gaps are just…wider.  Maybe it’s 12 yards between clubs instead of 10 (on a full swing).  Trajectory isn’t appreciably lower than Apex MB, just as easy to flight.  For me the 585 6-iron at 27° flies further and more consistent than the 26° X-Forged 5-iron.  It’s actually easier to gap with a 23-24° 4-utility or hybrid.

I had played Titleist MB and CB prior so I was very skeptical, but I also understand loft is just a number. In the end you're just talking about gaps. Also keep in mind that many companies are doing this. It isn't proprietary. More people are experimenting and finding this works well for their game.

Essentially what's happening in the Srixon set is that they're taking your 6-Pw, subtracting a club and then spacing out the new 7-Pw to cover the same span. It works great for me:

Pw - 125

9i - 139

8i - 152

7i - 164

6i - 178

5i - 190 (driving iron)

4i - 205 (driving iron)

It's hard to argue with those gaps. Not only do they make sense but you've also saved a club in the process.

I actually end up covering the same yardage span with 4-Pw that would've taken me 3-Pw using a traditional Titleist set. So I like it. I think it's important to make sure your gaps are nice and healthy. You don't want clubs overlapping.

I would agree. I also feel my new Srixon gaps are wider and therefore more comfortable. I think they end up being easier to sustain day-to-day whereas a tight, 10-yd gap might (at least on certain days) feel awkward.

I also purchased the 51-deg A-Wedge which I can't wait to try once my Vokey get a bit worn out.

Lots of fans of the MP57. They’re very playable. In the category of sweet irons that can be picked up pretty cheap these days.

I left the ZX7s for the T100. The ZX7s were buttery soft, almost too soft. The T100 would be perfect if they came in matte black.

Titleist makes great performing irons and the T100 irons look great. However, I have never really liked the way the more recent Titleist irons have felt. I had the 716 AP2 irons and those like the T100 irons are not solid forged irons. Great performance but a different feel. If I completed in tournaments I would take the performance over the feel but I don’t so I am willing to give up some performance for the feel of a nice solid forged iron. However, with all the positive feedback on the T100 and 620 CB irons I am going to give each of them a try.
