One Iron to play for rest of your life

Recommended Posts

I’ve been such a golf hoe for the last 5-10 years. Swear I’ve tried just about everything.   Ready to settle down and find my one and only.

if you were a single digit handicap who hits irons pretty well. Comfortable hitting any club 5-PW from blade go CB.  What would you say is the best iron in terms of feel, performance, forgiveness etc.  the best overall package iron?

i won’t really stick with one iron for rest of my life.  But if I could make it through a full season that would be an accomplishment.   I’d like to however truly find one i really click with and stick with it for years to come.  Just can’t decide

Just picked up another set of Ben Hogan '99 Apex's with Precision Rifle 6.0 shafts that are practically brand new. Absolutely love this combo and could see myself using it for a very long time. That said, I do have a set of Wood Brothers Champ Balance blades I've been wanting to fit with Oban shafts, that might give the Hogan's a run for the bag next year.

Probably T100/T100s.  Loads of tour usage, a design that hasn't changed appreciably much in the past 10-12 years.  Another second would be the Pro223 or JPX921 Tour.  Both are pretty classic designs that work for a lot of players and have some help if you need it.  Plenty to love about either of these and something you could definitely settle down with for a few weeks, or years 😉

While my favorite all-time irons (Z-101) have already been mentioned, I'd have to go with PING S-55. One of their iconic iron offerings with the aforementioned durability, would keep them in the bag into perpetuity.

BUT, if durability is not an issue, meaning I can replace with the same (as necessary), it would be a J15MB 7-W and Z-101 4-6.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

I'd perhaps also have a set of TM 300 Tours, just in case of mishap.

I am really liking the PXG Gen 3 0311XP irons I picked up this summer and I am fine sticking with them until the end of my playing days.

If I was in a Sophie's Choice situation and was forced to choose only 1 set of irons for the rest of my life, it would be the 845s

I'll second the PING S55. It has as much practical technology in it as any current iron (tungsten, milled face, etc.), plus the investment cast 17-4 steel makes it indestructible. (I have a set I've played regularly for 6 years and they still look almost new). It's small-ish and perfect for getting out of the rough, but still more forgiving than my '22 T100s. The sound/feel isn't soft per se, but it's still very satisfying. I had PING bend mine a degree strong and create 4-degree gaps, and I don't yet see a day when I'll get rid of them. Especially after they won the last U.S. Open.

The other option for a Forever Iron would be National Custom Works because they'll make you some heads that fit your swing as much as they fit your eye. And if you order them chrome plated, they have Jim Kronus dip them in his secret recipe which lasts years, no matter how many sandy range balls you hit.

Best of luck with the search.

Absolutely love my J33 CB, probably would be my pick. Unfortunately they're non conforming so I can't use them in PGA events so I built up a set of 718 MBs. Played with them a few rounds and loving them a lot too.

W/S FG17s that I currently play would be my choice if someone said pick a set for the rest of my playing days!

great set, but fo rthem to be my everyday players I would need to roiund off that leading edge, I am an upright digger so once in a while i throw mud over the ball with them, alsways at teh absolute wrong time. I have 2 sets. I may grind teh hell out of my beater set to see if I can get that good rounded edge that I like
