Project X 6.5 or 7.0 with +1", hard-stepping maybe

Hey all, just looking for advice on what the difference in PX Flexes might be between 6.5 and 7.0 if played +1".

Basically I'm asking, would 7.0 at +1" play close to 6.5?

I was thinking of 6.5 but hard-stepped.  If 7.0 will achieve the same flex, then I can just go straight in with a set of those shafts.

If I remember correctly, you would have to hard step the 6.5 x 2 in order to get the same stiffness as the 7.0.

Gotcha. So the only thing I really need to figure out is how much softer +1" would typically make the flex number. Obviously head weight is the variable.

Yes.  I think an inch longer would make the shaft maybe half a flex softer.

Yes, head weight is the biggest (and really the only important) variable.

Anyone giving any answers w/o addressing the issue of head weight is wasting your time.

If you have lighter weight heads and get "standard" (~D0-D2) swing weights at that +1" - the shaft will NOT play softer.  It will actually play FIRMER - roughly the equivalent of hard stepped x2.

If you use standard weight heads and end up with heavy swing weights (D6-D8+), then the shaft might play a tiny bit softer.   Most wouldn't even notice the difference but some might.   Only testing will tell you if it's enough that you actually need to do something about it.  Most can safely ignore it.

Some B weight heads are are on the order of 10 gm lighter than standard.  That would roughly be the equivalent of hard stepped x1.5 and might end up with a swing weight around D4-D6.

FYI - swing weight references above are based on what you'd get with a 50 gm grip.  Not what you might get with any type of change in grip or butt side weight.

Correct I would say the best estimate is that the 7.0 at +1" would play very close to a stock 6.5, I would probably just put the 7.0 straight in.  If you did the 6.5 i'd say you would need to hardstep at 2x.

Yep. I think I want them to play at 6.5+.. 6.7ish. So, maybe just the 7.0 at +1" would give me something right in the middle.

Yup, I get it. I'll be shafting MP20s, and shooting for D7 through the set (or maybe variable going lighter to heavier through the bag-not sure yet). I'll be working with a club builder as well, just trying to get the thought process behind this.

Main reason I'm trying to figure it out, is I'd like the feel of something slightly softer than current ($-Taper 130x), but don't want it too soft. If I just used 6.5 at +1" straight it, I think it'd be too soft.

Other Shafts I have in mind are:

DG120

LS 6.5/7.0

X100 straight in

Only way to find out is to give the various options a try - including the 6.5.

No, not even close to being in the middle with the head weights you're talking about.   Still stay very close to 7.0.   Probably need to soft step at least once if not twice if you want to start with the 7.0's.   Or using lighter heads with the 6.5's would be another possible route to take if you don't need the heavier swing weights  (usually more important to get a good fit for head weight than for stiffness).

But the FCM scale really isn't the best way to judge stiffness across different flexes so no way to know for sure until you do try them.
