10-club bag

I've actually been at 12 clubs for a little while now.

Driver

18* fairway

24* hybrid

6i-GW

54* & 58* wedges

putter

I could pull the 58* and the GW and probably be fine at 10 clubs to be honest. I normally score mid 80's and realized a few years back that I'd go months without pulling the 3w or 3h so I ditched them both.

Haha awesome. I do think amateurs overthink equipment including myself.

Except for amateurs who underthink equipment. Like the 140-pound guy who buys used irons with X100 shafts and wonders why he pushes/slices so many shots. Not many amateurs hit the happy medium.

The 10 clubs or less has been addressed by club designer Tom Wishon. His 730CL  set is designed for golfers with clubhead speed of less than 80 MPH. Features include a 16* driver and irons with 6 degree loft increments, rather than standard 4.

For a set of 10 clubs - not sure where the magic number came from - I suspect a high-lofted driver + 7W and a 4H or 5H, and 6i on up? (counting putter, the Wishon set has 11).

And it depends on the golfer. I play several different courses each month. On my home course I might not touch my 4H for the round, but might hit it several times at a neighboring course with longish par 3s and short par 4s with tight landing areas. My 14 clubs pretty well cover me for all course varieties.

And in closing: remember it's my bag, not yours.

70 years old and I like to carry and walk my rounds. Current HCP is 9.6.  My normal set is 7-9 clubs depending on the par 3 lengths. Due to health issues, my swing speed is pretty slow and a nice drive for me is 195-200 yards. I typically play a blend of senior and men's tees (5700-6000 yards)

Current setup:

  D.    12 deg

  3H

  5H

  7i

  9i

  PW

  SW.   56 deg

  P

I've found as age and health caught up with me and my swing speed slowed, that the gaps between my clubs needed to widen from 3-4 deg to more of 6-8 deg otherwise I would end up hitting two clubs basically the same distance. Going to a short set of clubs seemed to make sense, made it easier to carry and walk and hasn't impacted my HCP.

Understand this doesn't work for everyone, but that's the fun of this game. Find what works for you and enjoy!

Same here. I currently play off a 5 hdcp with 12 clubs and I imagine a 10 club set wouldn't be that big of a change (I think I would drop the 5i and SW without much trouble). I found that I was losing strokes going for par 5s in two with my 5W so I dropped it altogether. Now, I find I have more consistency in my scores (less birdies and bogeys) which is fine for me.

I use a 12 club setup that looks like this and covers all of my gaps:

-Driver

-3 wood

-5 wood

-4, 6 hybrid

-7-gw

-56 wedge

-putter

I built a setup for my fiance that she likes and its only a 9 club setup and I'd like to build a men's setup that is similar:

-Driver

-4 wood

-4 hybrid

-5,7,9 irons

-SW

-Putter

I haven’t done this in a long time, but I think I could do less than 10 and be pretty much fully functional.

Specifically referring to OP, my wife recently started playing more and carries her driver about 175. She plays with 10 clubs just fine. Gaps between “normal” set makeups just are not functional for lower swing speeds.

I choose 11, but for kind of opposite reasons. I hit my driver far enough that extra fairway woods and long irons are unhelpful on the courses I play… (6200-6500)

I carry D, 4H, 5-PW, 51, 57, P

If the course is long for me, I’ll put a 4w in the bag, but I hit it so terribly that it almost never gets used.

I have an 36* 8H that may fit in my bag for hitting the ball out of thick rough as the club face is less likely to get stuck in the grass than my 7 iron.

I've been learning so many things to improve my game that I just haven't had much time hitting the 8H.

Last year was course management and this year I learned driver.  Figured I start learning the basics first.

On the few days I've carried it I've been able to execute the the shot but that is just one out of the round.

I see a similar thing with the young golfer who is engaged to my niece. Twice now he has flown down from Portland, Oregon to Missouri for family events. To lighten his airline luggage ooad, I lend him my back-up golf bag for family golf rounds.

He's 6-foot-4 and hits the ball a long way, but has trouble with fairway woods. So, he always leaves the 4W and 3H in the car. He keeps the 4i, but other than that carries the same mix you do.

Well I’m about a foot shorter, but I’m glad we’re on the same page, haha. It’s actually even more similar given that My 4H is 4i length (well, an inch short, because I cut all 1”). I liked the higher launch but not the gapping, so I compromised. Go figure.

Me too -> 11 clubs is my daily gamer these days. 👍

I used to carry a 3W, an extra Hybrid, and a SW , but really not needed by me for my distance ( 98 Driver SS ) and the courses I play.  I like the simplicity, easy decision making, and the added lightness/no-clutter in my bag.

From twenty years ago...

I hit the ball longer than I do now. But, an intruder into golf caused some uncertainty on future bag mix: the Lob Wedge was a necessity for many newer, tricky courses. But, how to make room?

Quite a few of us did this: Kept driver, 3W and 5W, and squeezed out 4i.

  • 3i, 21* loft, +1 to 22*
  • 4i, 24* loft... gone!
  • 5i, 27* loft, -1 to 26*
  • 6i, 30* keep as is

========================

Another option came from the Ben Hogan PTX irons from 2016. The PTXs and other models offered irons in 1-degree loft increments from 20* to 47*. One suggested mix from the Hogan reps...

GameImproveIrons-Beauty-BenHogan-Proto16.png

  • 24* iron
  • 29* iron
  • 34* iron, and four degree loft increments up through the wedges

Use the 5-degree loft gaps on low end to squeeze out a long iron. Below

is a snippet of a Golf Digest review on the PTX model.

Spoiler

BEN HOGAN PTX | Our Review:

A little more than a year ago there was plenty of buzz among gearheads about the relaunch of the Ben Hogan Golf Equipment Co. Now those same Hoganites have products to drool over. Among them is this game-improvement option, a set that has hollow irons in lofts of 20 to 31 degrees and more traditional cavity-back irons from 32 to 47 degrees. (The company produces lofts in single-degree increments from 20 to 47 degrees instead of traditional iron numbers.) The hollow irons have a 17-gram tungsten toe weight to help launch the ball higher. The cavity-back irons use titanium forged with the carbon-steel body, which allows mass to be distributed higher for a more penetrating ball flight.

I've been playing with just 10 clubs for a few months now.  The set is:  Driver, 5W (18*), 5i (27*), 7i, 8i, 9i, PW (46*), 52*, 58*, & Putter.

On the surface, there is a massive distance gap between the 5i and the 5W.  As a practical matter, I only really notice the gap when playing one particular par 3 hole where missing long with the 5W or missing short with the 5i both risk a lost ball.

I will note that I didn't go directly from 14 clubs to 10 clubs.  Nor did I ever intend to go to 10.  I just wound up with 10 clubs almost by happenstance. I started with 14 clubs.  First, I did a common thing of shifting to a 52*, 58* wedge setup from a 50*, 56*, 60* wedge setup.  Sometime later, I removed my 3-hybrid because I'd lost confidence in it.  Being forced to play long irons since I didn't have the hybrid, I quickly learned that in almost any situation where I hit a 4i, a 5i would have worked just as well while producing more consistent results and that the 6i always seemed to be a bit short-legged and so never got used.  Thus, the 4i and 6i were relegated to the bench and I was left with a 10-club setup.

Just start playing 5* to 6* gaps starting at 8 iron.  I've done this with PXG irons and don't miss the 4* gaps at all.  I only have 5 irons from 34* to 56*.  Then take out 1 or 2 long irons or woods and you are down to 10.

I once put together a (mostly) 6° bag. Worked pretty well.

D - 10.5°

2h - 16°

4h - 22°

5i - 28°

7i - 34°

8i - 40°

pw - 46°

I play with a driver, 5 metal, hybrid, 5, 7, 9 wedge, sand wedge and putter. I find that I don’t miss my 4, 6 or 8 iron. I stay out of trouble even though I may have to utilise more of my short game. My scores improved. Fewer big numbers. What got me started with this was a Jones bag I recently purchased. It will hold 14 clubs but not comfortably so I reduced my bag to 10 clubs and discovered that I can perform just as good as with 14.

Gonna give this a try for the rest of the year now that the weather is nice to walk.  In golfwrx club ho fashion I didn't just pull out 4 clubs because that would of made way to much sense. Instead I went online and found used clubs to put together a totally separate carry bag.

1. LTDX driver 9*

2. Mizuno MP-001 3W 15*

3. Mizuno Fli Hi Forged 4i 24*

5-8.  6-PW JPX 921 Tour

9. JPX 54 degree SW.

10. Old Ping Anser putter

After reading this and going into detail that everyone did, I’m going to give this a try in PA this Friday. My wife is in a wedding and I’m joining at 6pm so have time to kill. With 10 I’ll have a gap at the top end, but sometimes use a 3W off the tees, might swap that for the driver (silly but can hit 3w 290).

- Driver or 3W

- 4-PW

- 56*
- Putter

Thoughts?

Irons: Taylormade P7MC 4-P w/ DG X100

Based on your sig, I assume you are a good golfer and probably a lower handicap!  That said, would you need to hit your 3 wood 290 yards to play the round?  I doubt it!

If you hit your irons well and long then the 4 is a good choice, otherwise I would probably try the driver, 5wd instead of the 3wd and a 4H instead of a 4 iron, then 5-PW.  This may give you a bit more versatility.  IMO.

That’s a good point, and why I debated 3w over driver. My issue, is I’m 50/50 with my driver and have been putting a lot of work into it, but more trust into my 3w right now.

Recently, I’ve actually been playing irons off the tee and giving myself good yardages. I carry a T-MB 2i and use that off the tees, but My 4i has been on lately and with my length (and the cheap public courses Ive been playing) have no issues reaching greens in 2.

Either way, going to give a setup a go Friday 👍🏼

I actually think it might lower my score some, playing position golf rather than distance?

It doesn't sound like you need a driver at all.  At 50/50, I would leave it out and just carry the 3wd or add that 2i in place of it to stay at 10 clubs.   If I hit a 3wd around 290 or heck even 260, I would have no need for a driver on just about all courses for sure!

I carry 13 in the bag but could easily do 10 if needed depending on the course. I will use 7 clubs for 9 holes in the evenings at the local course where I practice but that is all I need for those holes. I can say using less clubs has been fun creating shots on the spot and it has made my ball striking better. I would say my proximity to the hole is better with all the 1/2 and 3/4 swings versus full swings.
