Buying two sets of the exact same iron…

Lefty87

Recommended Posts

Who has done this? Did it provide the benefit you thought it would? I came across a set of irons I loved so much that I purchased a second set with the same specs. They’ve been sitting in my basement for a year now. it seemed like a good idea at the time, but now they are losing value and I don’t know that I’ll ever need them.

Never have done it.  If I had a 2nd home somewhere that was also around a golf course, I might have the 2nd set so I didn't have to haul clubs back and forth.

I have second sets but they are dedicated sets for range only, while the primary set is a Gamer.

This kind of makes sense to me. It also might be nice to have the same heads but with different shafts. So if you have a super windy day or something you could take the set with the lower launching shafts. Just a thought

I used to do that, then as OP realized, they basically collected dust and depreciated.

Once you find a set of iron heads that just flat out click for you, don't hesitate to get a backup set with the same specs.  Lots of comments from fellas who loved a set of irons they had 10 or 20 years ago that they wish they had kept a second set or could find again.

I have two sets of soon to be 20-year-old Mizunos that are identical spec wise.  As the need arises, I use the backup iron heads to test different shafts while I can continue to play the shafts in my other set.

That said, I've been lurking the BST and 2nd Swing for a set of 620 CB/MB myself, but they're still a little too high for just a backup set.

I have 4 sets of PF1/PF2 irons. I use a set for travel. And then some other sets to experiment with shafts. Love these irons and they don’t make them anymore.

fortunately they are cheap enough to do this.

my Miura sets are way to expensive to do this with.

It I think it is a great idea to have an extra set for travel. When the primary set wears down or if something breaks. Especially if you really love those irons.

the reality is that players irons don’t change much over time.

Whole iron set? No, but I did have a backup putter. If I liked practicing more, and I didn't have aftermarket shafts in my irons, I would consider it. As it is right now, lessons would be a better expenditure.

The only way I think I could justify this would be having a second home or if I practiced a lot andI do mean a lot.

I just did this about 2 months ago for the first time ever. Bought a back-up set of the Gen 4 Xtreme Dark XP's. Exact same spec as what I'm hitting now. I wanted to get another set before they ran out, and I did.

I have a backup set of iblade

heads because 1) I fell in love with the initial set immediately upon playing them and 2) the first set I got (used off here) are pretty beat up so I don’t think they’ll make it past next season. I think it was a worthwhile investment, ~$650 for the two sets of heads combined (back up set is close to mint) and I’ll be set for 5+ years, enough time to find something else I like as much as iBlade!

I got my first set of eye 2s in 1990.  I’ve played them ever sense. Adjusted once by ping when I finished growing.   Ordered a second set in 96 as I worked for a dealer and got it for cost.  Still have them basically un-hit.  Over the years I’ve procured two more sets of unused eye 2s to the same spec.  White dot 1/4 over.  Just sets I’ve found through various channels and had ping change the lie angle on.

I have three sets of mint clubs plus my gamers.  Funny thing is that the gamers still look good and ping refinished them this spring.

no regrets though…they don’t eat much and it’s a good conversation piece.  If I found another set tomorrow in mint shape I’d buy em lol

This seems a bit OCD.

I can see it making sense if you’re completely committed to irons that aren’t made anymore and may become scarce. Or if you belong to a national club and want to leave a set there.

I tend to stock up on things I like.  Had four sets of the original Snake Eyes MB-1s just because they were so cool looking and figured I’d never be able to get them again.  Eventually sold them for three sets of MacGregor gunmetals.  Still have two of those with one I haven’t used.  Have two other sets too.  It gets tricky now because of age and injuries where I really have to do a bunch of reshafts if I am ever going to use them again.  Seeing as it really should be to graphite, it gets expensive and a bit daunting.

Have five of the same MacGregor Bobby Grace Fat Lady copper putters because those are nice and I could find them for cheap.

Also have two of the same Miller Ryder Cup at Oak Hill USA staff bags.  Those are beautiful.

similar setups here.

some gear is reserved for in-season.

my fitter/repair man has given me the evil eye when resetting irons, "hitting off mats again?"

plus - kind of fun to change up stuff once in a while, just because you can.

How about 3 of the same driver head? I have 2 right now. Someone talk me out of buying #3…

Same irons? No. But I have bought backup wedges and regretted not buying a few more. Wedges, especially the ones for bunker use, do wear out.

Also, I've lots of different sets of irons, so I don't play one single set enough to wear out. I rotate them after almost every round.

Finally, all the practice ranges around here have us hitting off mats, which keeps the club face clean.
