Removing grip tape from inside grip?

I just pulled a Scotty Cameron putter grip and want to reuse it on another club.  About half the tape stayed on the shaft with the rest staying inside the grip.  Anyone have a good suggestion for removing the tape?  When I reuse the grip I'd like to be sure it's on snug.  Thanks.

Thanks Arch. When using this tool do I wait until the grip tape had dried out or do I scrub the grip while the tape is still wet?  By the time I order this the tape will have dried out (thus needing to spray solvent in the grip).

12 gauge shotgun cleaning brush works well although 20 gauge probably would be very good too I just has 12 gauge around.

I've only used it wet after grip removal. But try it dry and if that don't work too good, wet it. I've found when you insert it into the grip, take your other hand and apply pressure to the brush from the outside of the grip gets best results. You can light the brush also to get the gunk off of it.

This is what I use.  Plug the butt end of the grip and let solvent soak in there for a little while.  Then use the 12g brush.

I used a screwdriver when I needed to clean my grip.  Took over 45 minutes to get all the tape out..... 😐

When I used to do a lot of grip swapping, I used a 24" long 5/8" threaded rod.  Slip the grip over the rod, grab the grip in the spot where the residual tape is hanging on and rip it off.  Generally did the trick.

Those brushes work okay but they get gunked up pretty easily and are hard to clean.  They’re too expensive as well.  My cheaper, and imo better, solution is to go to a hardware store and buy a 5/8”x2’ threaded rod.  Cost is probably $7-8.  Wrap one end with some duct tape or similar to make a handle.  Plug the vent hole of the grip with a tee.  Pour about 1/2 ounce of de-odorized mineral spirits into the open end of the grip.  Plug the open end with a finger and slosh the solvent around inside the grip for a couple of minutes.  Pour out the solvent and remove the tee.  Then run the threaded rod  up into the grip all the way to the end.  Withdraw the rod while gently squeezing along the grip as you are pulling it out.  If the tape is stubborn it make take 2-3 repeats to remove all of the tape.  Occasionally some tape will stick at the very butt end of the grip that the rod won’t grab.  If that happens I can usually get it out with a long, flat bladed screw driver.  I’ve cleaned many grips using this method.

Depending on how gunked up/etc the grip is, I'll use a pick and a pair of long nose pliers

 

a cheap pick set like this can work wonders on getting pieces of tape out (click)

Whether you use a brush or all-thread, I would suggest using naphtha as your solvent. Ive found it works best on grip tape and residue.

For me, the best strategy has been to put the grip on another shaft.  I have a steel shaft with no head and i will lubricate the end of the shaft and inside of the grip and slide the grip on the shaft (usually without tape) and the shaft will usually scrape out the tape, either balling it up in the end of the grip or inside the shaft.  Either way you can then blow it out with a can of compressed air.
