Ping PLD Copper Limited Edition

Was lucky to hit the lottery and be able to purchase one of the copper units when it was released.   😁  It was just delivered.  Figured some of you may want to see it with the "presentation" box.  Here you go.  Sorry some of the photos are upside down and I don't have the energy to figure out how to fix it.

A very sad situation that as of this morning 18 of the 55 were listed on ebay, all price gouging for at least 3 x last Monday's retail price.  That's 1/3 of the entire release.  Ping has handled the sale of these putters really, really badly.

I love that PING doesnt put alignment on some of these PLD putters. They are listening to the masses and custom orders. It seeks many people these days are going to topline, sight dot, or no line. Very nice.

 

@colinkelvin how else should they have done it? All these custom releases from makers end up this way don't they?

Not sure how they would have handled it differently.  This is a collector's item, not a gamed type putter, IMO.  Same goes with a Cameron tour.  Nothing makes it worth 2K+ other than it is a collector's item more than anything.

It depends if Ping wanted to get these straight into the hands of brand loyalists and collectors who wanted to keep them, or just to release them into the market with the likelihood of price gouging by third parties between Ping and the collectors.  They did the latter.  If they wanted to do the former, they could have offered lottery entry to the four releases to, for example, people who had bought a PLD custom, or a set of new irons, in the past year.  They could also have made it a lottery with, say, a $200 entry, refundable against Ping products if unsuccessful, rather than first come first served which allows bots and software to get in first, with no downside (i.e. loss of the deposit). Lastly, they could have said "these are for Ping collectors. If we see your putter being sold on ebay within X period of time then you are ineligible for future releases".

man have you seen the price of copper these days??? Lol

 

honestly I’m so intrigued by what metal they used I actually emailed them (doubt they’ll tell me) 

 

pure copper is absolutely impossible to machine, it’s like trying to mill gum. Milling they old MnBr is hard enough and that stuff might as well be diamonds compared to pure copper. 
 

although a copper alloy would actually be more cool if they did it
