I Love Offset!

Recommended Posts

I’ve had a whirlwind of a season when it comes to irons. Started the season with a set of Mizuno 223’s which I was fitted for. Didn’t like them, hit them ok just not great. Went to a set of T100. Again hit them ok, didn’t love them. Just recently got a set of Sub70 TAIII’s didn’t like them.

Everything I look at just does not fit my eye. I go back to these, I believe, 1980’s Sears MacGregor MCX irons. I found these in my brother in laws garage about 10 years ago.  Shafts and grips were junk.  I needed some irons so I pulled the heads cleaned them up and reshafted with some Wishon Series 5 stiff flex shafts that I had laying around at the time. I believe they are an 1” over standard in length and pretty heavy at about D5 swing weight. If I were to take these out to play right now I’d probably play pretty well. This 7 iron is that one club that I just love for some reason. Bunch of offset and turf interaction is wonderful. I don’t know!

My question, can anyone think of anything more modern that I might try and see if I can improve on this magic!?

BTW, a friend and playing partner loves the look of an offset driver.  Those are few and far between these days, so he's playing a Cobra, last I heard.  To each their own.

These look a lot like a version of the Nicklaus Golden Bear model which has some interesting attributes that are worth considering when it comes to a modern replacement.

Despite what the aesthetics might imply they have have a super high MOI, and thus are very forgiving. The back shaping moves a lot of weight towards the toe and the hosels of that time period tended to be longer and heavier. The combines to form a lot of perimeter weighting which = high forgiveness. The offset also helps with this by moving the overall CG back. The CG is pretty mid, not high or low. Overall this is a strange combo of specs that is going to be really hard to reproduce in a modern club and you'd almost certainly end up compromising somewhere or having to heavily modify something.

The Ping i210 probably comes the closest overall, especially if you can bend a little more offset into it. Everything else is going to be a compromise, because nothing has an MOI this high while also looking like a blade and having a ton of offset. I'd hunt for good condition backups of the same thing to be honest.

Also consider that part of your love for them might be the fit as you went 1" over and thus much heavier as well. Something to consider if you did not do the same with the other clubs.

Really, nobody has mentioned the VAS yet? I mean they are newer than the irons the op pictured. As far as stuff from this year I don't really have an idea because offset doesn't really matter to me.

Look no further than New Level 1031.  It's a few years old, but based on the fact you enjoy irons from 30-40 years ago, I don't think that will bother you much.  Super soft feel, feel better than many forgings on the market, extreme offset for a player's designed club.  Decent MOI as well, I found them decently forgiving, probably in line with the 223s.  There's an address picture I took from Google.

A lot of new clubs have offset they just do a better job of hiding it.  I like offset…but I grew up playing Pings and Lynx etc

I am NOT one to use offset, but if it works for you, have at them.   Some people benefit from offset, even pros.

Those 1031 look intriguing! Initial look on eBay, they are not to be found as a set. Looks like a bunch of demo 6 irons is all

Reach out to New Level either on Instagram or directly on their site.  Maybe Eric has a set kicking around he'd be willing to part with or knows where you could source a set.

Whoa. I never understood why people cared so much about offset. A little, a decent amount, get adjusted to them and it’s whatever. Then again, I had no idea irons like this existed lol.

No shame though, in the recent PXG 0317ST promo Zach Johnson said he liked having a bit of offset. If it’s good enough for a Masters champ…

Offset plus thin soles is a great but hard to find combo these days. My Ping ISI are ones I keep coming back to.

The new PXG 0317STs may fit the bill for you. See my previous comment

edit… actually looking at the in hand photos from the thread under tour equipment, I’d say there’s only a little bit of offset. So prob not what you’re looking for after all.

interesting to see the T100 and T100s fall into the GI space and the ping 525 does not

curious about this. Read their website and sounds like their irons are forgiving.

Ya I'd like to find out but DHL lost the box lol so gonna take a while..... offset is just a weird concept and got a feeling Im gonna love no offset.... played every sport with a racket, bat or stick thingy and so the face lined up hosel sounds very appealing

Can't figure how to like my own posts
