If you make a trip and are committed to sleep outside the starter shed you can get on just about any day.

I wonder how many actually apply for the advanced.

 

Seems more failures reported here than successes!

My buddy and myself were not selected either. I’m sure the demand is much higher then the supply. What’s crazy is I’ve won the 48 hour ballot twice when I’ve been.

I'll throw a success story out there...I was selected for late April 2023 (preferred time out of the three options I applied for). Requested Old & Jubilee and was selected for Old & Castle. Shoulder season could have been a big key to my success. I had trips booked for 2020 & 2021 (no guaranteed TOC tee time) that were cancelled. Applied on a whim just to see what happens and here we are in scramble planning mode. Itinerary below:

 

Day 1: Gullane 1 (possibly Musselburgh Old with hickories off the plane)

Day 2: Dunbar

Day 3: North Berwick

Day 4: Jubilee & Elie
Day 5: Kingsbarns

Day 6: Panmure & Carnoustie

Day 7: Old

Day 8: Castle

 

Some courses I'll try to add if time and body allow: Kilspindie, Gullane 2, Crail, Eden or New

I was in the ballot 3 times in a row 10 days ago and failed each day and that's with a New club member, trying again this Wednesday till Saturday.

We'll be visiting in August 2023 as a foursome and plan on doing the 48 hour ballot and / or getting up super early in line at the starter shack.  We'll have 8 days in St. Andrews so hopefully we can get on the Old course once or twice.

Well, I would say you are due… Not sure if it’s fact, but I was told that Thursdays are the best day for the 48 hour ballot because they don’t take any advanced times for Thursdays so it’s only members and 48 hour ballot.

Hope you have better luck than I did a few months ago. I entered the old course ballot 7 different days in August 2022 - 3 days with a two some (Sat, Mon, Tues), and 4 days with a 4 some (Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs) - and never got through.

 

The good news is that everyone I was with who really wanted to play and was committed to doing the starter shed was able to get on, and get on with at least one other person from the group. I'll also add that it was worth having one very uncomfortable night to get to play it. I wouldn't do it again any time soon... but am 100% glad that I did it once.

For people who camp out at the starter shed, does everyone have to camp?  I would do it myself, but I'm going with my 76 year old father and don't think he can handle that most likely.  I assume it would probably be frowned upon if he just showed up in the morning?

Yes, everyone who wants to play needs to be there.

I got my starting time through an authorized provider, so I never tried advance bookings or the walk-up line the night before.  Does anyone know the success rate of the advance bookings?   How many applicants for how many slots?
