Thanks @JungleJimbo.

I assumed it was her worst round on the LPGA Tour.

Not so long ago J. Ko shooting 70 was a poor round!

Yikes. Don't recall seeing this wide a spread in scores for a single round. Birdies galore, but the course has teeth.

Interesting that some players have not recorded a driving distance for R1 eg Sung-Hyun & Leona.

Both with terrible driving rounds re accuracy @ 5/14 and 6/14 fairways hit respectively so must have missed the fairways that were being used to record distances.

Hmm.

Like a green grass version of 'Pleasantville' - almost all the Koreans seem to avoid any vibrant colour in their attire.

Lydia as a Korean Kiwi doubly so.

Hmm.

On holes where driving distance is measured, they'll measure the distance if it's in the rough.

Interesting - what can be the explanation then for no recorded driving distances for those 2 (and maybe others)?

@Rapidcat That's an interesting "Pleasantville" reference

... albeit seems to be most LPGA players this week (not just the Koreans)

(with the exception of the Thai contingent ...  e.g. Pornanong Phatlum's "LoudMouth" skirts... and Thitikul's pink sweater?)

...But! Didn't "Pleasantville" end with many of the movie's characters go "full technicolor"? 🌈

I'm guessing the LPGA's apparel regulations might've nudged most players to be more conservative in their attire nowadays

(vs the "wild west east" of the KLPGA with nascar-style big logos/corporate sponsorship?)

e.g.

...vs LPGA photos (https://seoulsisters.freeforums.net/post/74758/thread)

... and here via GettyImages)

Hmm, the "LPGA's apparel regulations", what is this sorcery? Doesn't explain the wonderfully talented and performed (and thankfully recovered) Danielle Kang wearing hoodies and tracksuit bottoms, but now in Korea she wears them in shades of black and white?

At least Eric Van Rooyen wears similar silly pants but adds some colour to his ensemble - colour (or color, WTH), remember that:

Erik van Rooyen's ankle-shy pants caused quite a stir at The Open - GolfWRX

But! Didn't "Pleasantville" end with many of the movie's characters go "full technicolor"?  I can only hope that happens on the LPGAT - for heavens sake players, take a chance with something a little bit exciting, its all so homogenised. Player sponsors, have a say.

Lastly...vale Argonne's fashion thread, maybe it can be seen as PC if there is an equivalent one for the PGAT in the Tour thread (yeah, right).

Didn't the broadcast give JYK a quad-bogey 9 on the last? Also, Thitikul's drop on same was fishy. She marked the area w/tees for the drop, ball falling slightly outside of that area (it appeared on TV). Getting bad advice perhaps, she removed her tees to hit the shot, only to replace the tees (in a slightly different spot) when the official was heading over. Then she proceeded to 'place' the ball inside the newly placed tees. Obviously the placed ball was the better lie than the prior dropped lie. It just seems that an official's declaration on the original dropped ball would have been the way to go.

Sitting down to enjoy my recording of the first round.

OK, I'm weird, but I like the tin cup sound. Don't know if it's real, or a studio trick, but it's better than plastic. Lol.

Interesting that the leaderboard has Minjee shown as 'Min Jee'. I'm pretty sure Min Jee is her given name, but she's used Minjee her entire professional life. Similar to In Bee.

Speaking of Inbee, where has she been? She hasn't teed it up since the AIG in early August.

The course looks great.

More than likely it's real.  A lot of the courses in Asia particularly in Japan and Korea have metal cups.

It never ceases to amaze me how flat footed Minjee's swing is. It's almost all upper body turn. Her left knee bends slightly. You watch classic videos from the 70s and the left heel was off the ground, and the knee bent at a severe angle.

Well if there's a jinx, count me in for R1...  JYK and Hinako... for a while there Hinako was prolly heading out soon (even on a no cut event - so I was initially right).  turned out she wanted in to have more dinners with her Korean friend Lee6 and made even par.  🤣... She still can win , 9 off😁

The clip I saw ended with the announcer saying “Jin Young has that for a 9”.  Obviously thinking she’d make it to save a 9!  Amazing how fast the strokes piled up.  She had somehow held it somewhat together for 17 holes, but …😲

This article from Beth-Ann Nichols mentions that JYK missed a 3-foot putt

World No. 1 Jin Young Ko made a 10 on one of the worst days of her LPGA career in South Korea

Beth Ann Nichols

Fri, October 21, 2022 at 3:47 AM·2 min read

e7f8655febb3d8224af29faf90447594

Jin Young Ko’s worst round on the LPGA, an 8-over 80, came on home soil after a two-month break from the tour to nurse a nagging wrist injury. The World No. 1 posted a catastrophic 10 on the par-5 18th at Oak Valley Country Club to close her round.

The top three players in the world were grouped together on Thursday at the BMW Ladies Championship. Ko played alongside hotshot rookie Atthaya Thitikul, who posted a course-record 63 to pace the field, and No. 2-ranked Minjee Lee, who shot 70.

“Golf can be like this,” Ko told South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency. “Things don’t always go the way I want them to. I did the best I could. Whatever the final score is, it’s on me to accept that and to figure out where I can get better. I will try to stay positive to get ready for the remaining rounds.”

Ko told Yonhap that she didn’t want to make any excuses with her wrist, noting that her goal is to wrap up the tournament playing pain-free. She’s currently tied for 76th in a field of 78. There is no cut.

Jin Young Ko of South Korea prepares to play her second shot out of the rough on the 18th fairway during the first round of the BMW Ladies Championship at Oak Valley Country Club on October 20, 2022, in Wonju, South Korea. (Photo by Chung Sung-Jun/Getty Images)

After carding four bogeys in a row on Nos. 10-13, Ko lost her first drive off the par-5 18th into the trees on the left side. Her provisional bounded down a cart path down the left side before settling just below the tree line, giving the right-handed Ko no place to take a stance.

Ko hit her fourth shot left-handed, and the ball trickled straight downhill to the path. Her fifth shot found the left rough, still a good distance from the green.

The sixth shot was similarly dreadful, landing way left and short. She failed to pitch her seventh shot onto the green, remaining in the rough. Her eighth blow left her a putt of about 3 feet, which she missed.

Ko has made a habit of coming back strong after long breaks from the tour, but not this time.

How out of character is the 80? Consider that earlier this year she posted a tour record 16 consecutive rounds in the 60s and in late March, her streak of 34 consecutive rounds under par, another tour record, came to an end at the Chevron Championship. The streak dated back to July 2021.

Always find it odd that pros need an official for such a basic drop.

Placing it was correct but by the time she placed it she definitely wasn’t placing it in the exact spot it hit. I think she was a bit generous with her initial nearest point of relief.

I've been surprised twice that she didn't listen to David.  Yesterday and at Wilshire when she was in the drainage ditch.  David has been at this gig for longer than JYK has been alive.  Sometimes you can't save the player from themselves.

No way Brooker recommended that strategy.

JYK broke 80 this time😝.  Not a big fan but hope her wrist is OK.

Lydia putting some more space between her and Minjee in the scoring average race; relevant for the HoF points.  Looking at all of her stats, its kind of amazing she's only won once this year.  There was a question a while ago on how far she could get "back."  The wins aren't there yet but everything else seems to be.  Need to drive it a tad better a couple more weeks or get a bit lucky and the narrative will be quite different.

    • In-hand photos of 2023 TaylorMade Stealth 2 Plus, Stealth 2, Stealth 2 HD drivers + fairways woods
Check out our front page launch stories here and here.

What you need to know: For the first time, carbon is the most prevalent material by volume in a TaylorMade driver, and more carbon equals better performance, says the company. Last year, TaylorMade debuted a 60X Carbon Twist Face. With TaylorMade Stealth 2, engineers are bringing carbon to more of the golf club — and unveiling a new-and-improved Carbon Twist Face in the process. Stealth 2 Plus (low spin, most workable) Stealth 2, and Stealth 2 HD (draw bias, high launch, most forgiving) drivers make up the Stealth 2 family.

What you need to know: Breakthrough movable weight technologies and versatile designs are the hallmarks of the 2023 TaylorMade Stealth 2 fairway woods. Stealth 2 Plus is branded as “three fairway woods in one” owing to the unique performance characteristics afforded by the 50-gram sole weight. Stealth 2 features a slightly lower profile 3D carbon crown than Stealth. This moves CG down and away from the toe with more weight in the rear of the club for higher launch and MOI. Ultra-high MOI Stealth 2 HD features an oversized 200cc head and low-profile sole, creating an easy-to-hit, draw-biased club.
