How important is a launch monitor in the development of a junior golfer? I see lots of top players with golf simulators set up at home and I'm wondering if this is normal or extreme.

None

I think they hold value to possibly have.  I just don't think it is important in the development.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

I own one there are pros and cons to having it. I also have a membership to an indoor spot that has TM, and foresight. I think it can make you get too technical on things. Or swing to hard trying to get max carry vs just knowing what you know you can hit x club. But its not necessary to success but it is a great tool to have access to. There is a ton of value to having it. Its great for dialing in yardages on full and particle shots.  Seeing growth over time with swing speed ect.

Possible value if it makes practice more fun, therefore doing it more often and longer sessions.  But as others sadi,it can be dangerous too if you get caught up in just chasing numbers.

Are you talking about having a LM or a simulator set up at home or both?   with regards to an in home sim, I'd say there is little to no correlation between having one and development of a jr. golfer.   I mean its nice to have during those rainy days, but most people I know who have one rarely use it once the novelty wears.

I think once a player has developed, a LM can be useful.  I'm talking GC Quad or something similar.  Cheaper units like Mevo+ is worthless unless you are just trying to measure swing speed.

I've seen pretty opposite opinions on using advanced launch monitors, e.g. Trackman, GC Quad, etc. Essentially, it is one of those "your mileage may vary" situations.

Some folks only use LM to validate swing changes or discover certain flaws/trends eyes don't see. Some folks swear by LM numbers as in constantly monitoring player's numbers and making sure numbers stay within certain window.

And I've seen good players come out of each camp.

I have the top end Flightscope LM and it does everything that I need. I only have it because a friend gave it to me when he bought the GC Quad. I use it to dial in my daughter's wedge distances for the most part. I will check it occasionally to make sure her other club distances are right. Outside of that, I never use it. It is a luxury not a necessity. When my daughter takes lessons, her coach has TM and shows me all the data. I'm paying him to get all her stuff right. If you start getting into all that data its paralysis by analysis.

We have the Full Swing Kit. It is a nice self contained unit, and is easy to set up. Youngest daughter will use it on the range to verify distances and sometimes we set it up for approach shot practice on the course, just checking for spin and carry distances. She rarely uses it at home as she starts to chase numbers with it and gets her swing out of whack. For her, it probably is not necessary, although once our SIM room is complete I have a feeling she will use it all the time.

My middle daughter golfed a few years and quit but now has decided that she is going to golf again this spring and uses it almost daily indoors. To that end a device that gets your kid to make 100 swings a day with feedback is definitely going to help with their development. She doesn't get into the numbers, except distance and direction, but I can review and tell her what is going on with her impact. She is just going to play her HS season and so I would imagine getting a kid from high 90s to her goal of high 80s this is a pretty good tool to have.

Whether it is normal or extreme is only up to the person who has it. For me it seems perfectly logical, but we have a lot of dark rainy days in the PNW. Also, I did not buy it just for my kids, but for me mostly. I use it more than anyone else.

I guess my position is less technical, without worrying about numbers too much - swinging the club a lot makes golf easier.
