this club looks really good. but just curious, would someone be carrying this in addition to a driver? is this supposed to take place of a 3 wood?

@scooterhd2 nailed it. Some people even do both.

I was having trouble hitting full length drivers last year, so I switched out of my F9 into a 300 Mini 11.5 while working the kinks out.

My driver works again (thank you new shaft) so it went back into the closet for a while.

Then two months into the season, I realized that I don’t hit 3 wood off the deck. I am blessed with distance, and my driver now goes 285 flat carry, usually 305 roll. I have a 3 wood that goes 265 flat carry, 280 roll, and a 5.5 wood that goes 250 flat carry, 260 roll. Then I have a UW21 that goes 230 flat, 240 roll and a 4UDI that goes 210 flat, 220 roll. I simply don’t play any courses near me that have a 585 yard par 5. I’m often hitting that 4UDI as a second shot.

So now I carry a 300 Mini 11.5 turned to 13UP that does the same as my old 3 wood but is much easier for me to tee off with. I also have much more confidence in changing the height of my shot with it just by varying tee height and position, whereas with my driver I can’t really do that but instead I can work it left or right.

And yea I had to drop a wedge for my current setup. Playing with a 46-50-58 right now but it will probably shift to 46-53-60 real soon as the grooves are wearing down.

The height of shot is a great point as well.

It’s been a prototype that we developed for Phil late in 2021 and at this point there are no plans to release it. This happens a lot BTW. Just because it hits the USGA list doesn’t necessarily mean it will hit the shelves. Its def a TBD

Hopefully they decide to release it eventually.

Oh well...back to the 200cc 3 wood fad. (Which I love)

I carry a Callaway 2 Deep at 12.5* and a driver.  The 2 Deep goes almost as far as my driver, but it is easier for me to shape it right to left.  I like hitting fades with my driver so I carry the 2 Deep for holes that need the other shape.

I don’t buy their reply on whether or not it will be released. They been doing quite well selling tour heads as limited edition. They said the same thing about the Apex UW and JW hinted that this would probably release even though there was a small market for this type of club. I could be wrong, but I say it will hit the shelves at some point considering they actually branded the prototype that Phil was testing months ago.

Seems like they made this purely to appease Phil. Only to have Phil go off the deep end trying to burn the PGA to the ground.

Interesting that JDub on all his AMAs doesn't even acknowledge the Cally players that jumped ship to LIV.  Dude couldn't stroke Phil and Gooch enough prior to that.

If this is a one off for Phil, it seems like a lot of time and resources to also make this in RH.

Wouldn't surprise me to see a VERY limited release of this not unlike what they did in '22 with the Trip Diamond S driver and the Trip Diamond T fairway wood.

Interesting the loft is 10.5*

Must be some sort of smaller head, higher headweight to fit you into a 43.5-44" shaft

This was the first thing I noticed too.  I think this club could be a very interesting option if it is lofted a bit lower.

See, I think it should be 12.0° and 14.0°. That's a true mini driver by all senses of the word.

When you make it in 9.0°, 9.5°, 10.0°, 10.5°, heck even 11.0°, its not really a mini driver, but rather, a shortened driver.

The way I think about the concept of mini driver, I think reduced head size AND shortened shaft AND increased loft.

Just my $0.02.

I get what you mean. I think it really depends on what you are trying to get from the club. I struggle with bigger clubs. Bigger irons, bigger woods, etc. more room to miss. I am no great ball striker, but fit after fit they end up putting me in a smaller headed club than my handicap would indicate. If I could get a smaller headed driver, with lower loft, could be a game changer for me.

I feel ya. Take a look at the A Grind Classic 350.

If it’s designed right you don’t have to increase loft. The original Phrankenwood designed for Phil was 9.5*

I can guarantee none of us, here, strike the ball like Phil. Unless the man himself is amongst us.

But… I thought everyone here used TX shafts in all their gear? 😂

All joking aside… if it’s designed right it doesn’t have to be higher lofted. Example is the TSR2+. Titleist didn’t even want to put a loft on the stick because they felt like it would scare away a lot of players with the club having 13* of loft even though they knew the club launched much higher and easier than a 13* fwy wood. I think callaways first attempt at a mini was pretty awful and I think it’s pretty obvious they have the engineers to put together a mini that can rival what Tmag has made over the years.

-- Hmm. I guess I'm just a straightforward guy. No reason to BS. I've tried to build and mold my own Mini Drivers over the years in many different forms so I have some experience.

-- Agree. And agree. Hopefully this is a segment Callaway can successfully get a handle on. I'd love to see them be successful in this arena.

Yeah but the thing is those heads more often or not we’re not designed for that purpose and I think that’s why so many people tried and bailed on the idea.

I’ve used or at least tied every mini driver that has been out on the market and Callaway has always come out on the bottom from the X Hot2 mini, XR mini and the 1.5 mini. The retail Aeroburner and SLDR minis weren’t the greatest but the Tour long hosel SLDR was pretty damn good in 10.5*

@JohnnyCallaway JW: Any chance these get a limited release/ general release? It's been awhile since we've seen a Callaway Mini Driver (not since the Bertha 1.5 Mini?)
