What degree Hybrid really replaces each iron?

I chose a 22* degree A12 pro with dg steel to replace my 3 iron. My 4 iron is 24 degrees. Works out well for me. I carry the hybrid about 5 yards longer than my 3 iron with a much higher launch.

Just bought SLDR-S hybrid #5 ( 25 degree ) . I am planning to give my self some tries again using a hybrid. I am guessing 5H should replace my 4i or 3i .... ? Is my guessing correct ?
Depending on the lofts of your irons, I'd say that's pretty close to a 3i-

It depends obviously on the design and flight characteristics of the hybrid though I replace a 21° 3i with a 24° Adams Pro, so I'd say 3-4° difference.

I would definitely hit em and not guess if ya can Bro-

The Best to ya and Have a Blessed Holiday season :)

I recently purchased the 19* sldr s to replace my 3i too! At the range it carries maybe 15 to 20 yards short if my 15* 3 wood but with a much higher launch. My 3 wood is also sldr s and carries about 230 yards with a nice roll.

I dont get my distances and heights consistently on either so Ive been wondering if I have enough seperation in them ? They are bith farely new so Im hoping I get things going and build/ find some separation

Its a pain but you have to gap test on a launch monitor. Try to different stores and take your iron that wish to replace in and try lots of different make hybrids in different lofts to match your iron yardage.

matching iron loft to hybrid loft doesn't produce equal distances but rather create gaps. have to go a couple degrees higher in loft to match iron distance imo. I don't know about you all, but I like the extra distance hybiids provide. I like your bag set up with 16 degree 3 wood and then two hybrids. I bet your problem gab is between the 5 iron and your next hybrid up. I bet strong lofted irons like the new titleist AP1's would fit in there nice.

As a few others above me have stated, this is a question with too many variables to answer with one stock answer.

For me, personally, I have a 2 replacements for my 3i. I have a 22° graphite shaft hybrid that launches the ball miles in the air and I have a 20° steel shafted hybrid that launches the ball much more like a 3i, but it much more forgiving.

While the 22° would seem to be the better club to hit and hold a green, from 215ish, I'm not hitting that many greens anyway, so I often prefer the steel shafted hybrid.

FWIW, these are both older hybrids, so with today's slot and face technology, I could easily see doing what Richard said and having 2 clubs in the bag with the same loft, ie. a 27° 5i and a 27° hybrid to replace your 4i.

I was taught this by my teacher however I realize that for some this may not be possible so if this applies to ya, implement it, if not, forget it-

What I am speaking to is evaluating a club, ANY club, to put it in my bag, ESPECIALLY at the LONG end-

If possible, THE best scenario for evaluating a club is on the course, real time, real conditions,ie., fairway, rough, bunkers, off the dirt and debri, etc......

The next best scenario is a practice tee/range off of the grass, NOT a mat!!!

I have only used these top two, I'd say the first 70-75% of the time, the second 25-30%,

However the scenario that I have never ever used, is off of a mat or LM-

I look at two variables-

1) Divot
2) Flight

I don't need some frickin machine to tell me how good of a shot that I just hit, lol

Especially with a long club because I'd say from the 5i longer, for the vast vast majority of mid/high cap Ams, a mental change occurs when they pull the club-

Into their mind creeps "distance" and the breathing gets a tad shallower(Breathing is ultra-critical to one's swing and ultimately play), the swing gets a touch quicker and a smidgeon shorter and wala, their journey to hell has begun, lol

My point is that I have never got as "clean" of a lie on a any course that I've played as the lie of a ball on a mat-

I can't tell ya the number of guys who hit some club off of a mat and loved it and then hit the course and couldn't reproduce those results-

Obviously if you are unable to do this, do what ya gotta do however if you could do this and just choose not to, well, it's your game, lol

Just my .01 worth

Take care Bros and have a great weekend :)

Golfingly Yours,
RP

[sup]You can try and figure out the gaps by using the math and all of the info given here. But IMO the best way to figure it out is to use a launch monitor or hit them at a driving range. They all have different lofts and the shafts will all do different things. You can spend a lot of time trying to figure it out on your own or you can get fitted for a club that will work for you. I know that a lot of people hear the word "fitted" and then they start thinking $$$$$. However if you weigh in the amount of time you spend looking on your own and the money you spend testing clubs out on a range, I think that you will find that you might actually save money and most important find confidence in the fact that when you pull that club out to use it, there should be no doubt in your mind that it will perform the way it is supposed to for your swing type.[/sup]

+1
I wanted a hybrid to use as a 3 iron, when I was fitted I wound up with a 4 hybrid 22 deg, a 3 hybrid left me a 25 yard gap between that and my 4 iron..
