what would you guys say is the best players style iron out these days?  Small. Compact. Thin. Narrow. Little offset but packs a punch and isn’t just strictly a blade.

Wilson Staff CB

New Level 623CB

Titleist T100

The W/S and Titleist options are downright tiny but have Tungsten buried inside to increase MOI. The New Levels are pure unadulterated forged carbon steel in a (relatively) tad larger but still compact players design. I played the NL902 (predecessor to the 623CB) and they would have been my forever set if I hadn’t switched to blades.

Miura TC-201 without a doubt. I’ve played mostly Titleist and Mizuno in the past, but switched to the Miuras last year and will never play another iron. Great turf interaction, compact look at address, a little help with heel/toe perimeter weighting, and that feel….oh the feel!

I picked up golf about 10 years ago as a secondary hobby to drag racing in after quitting racing back in 2017, clubs have replaced that need to buy parts.

The ONLY thing that has helped me slow down and land on a set for a while is having something custom built.  Something that takes a little more time and patience, spec'd exactly how you want them and built by someone you can communicate with instead of clicking buy on another mass produced run of the mill set that anyone can own.

Nailing down the head is the hardest part, but you know the shaft you want and most likely the grip and buildup.  Ask for a specific swing weight, pick out a nice set of ferrules ect.  The only thing have found that stops me from moving on so quickly is having time and personal value invested in a club(s).

Would recommend Will at Peoples Golf for such a build, super easy to work with and the best customer service I've received across the industry.

I would’ve said AP2, but not far different from T100. Have you hit Z745 or Z785? If not, definitely recommend trying.. I’ve hit or played any major iron in the past 5 years. Have always come back.

I disagree AP2 you need to work more for shot shape. T100  much easier to work the ball. I think personally I like the AP2 more. But....

I love my ZX7s. I have Miura TC 201s on the way and Im really hoping those are my clubs for a few years. You could always do the 225s and bend them a little weak to remove some offset...

I’m hoping that my new-to-me Ping i20’s with Recoils are my forever clubs. And by forever, I mean at least 3 years… 2 years minimum…

Are you playing 623 MB?

No. Primary set is Ben Hogan 1999 Apex blades, and I work in some Wilson Staff blades from the ‘70s and ‘80s as well.

Idk how people go through so many irons. For me it’s hard to improve my swing If I keep changing equipment. Different with the woods because I don’t practice as much with those and changing out for something that gives more distance makes sense.

the nice thing about irons because distance isn’t as much of a concern as most will be comparable lofts and lengths for the last 15 years at least so you have more options to pick from and maybe save some money on some older models

really intrigued with the new i230 coming out.  But of course I am.  It’s a new iron haha.

I have literally played, bought and sold probably 20 iron sets over the last 5 years.  Definition of a club hoe here.  Everytime I see a new iron I get that warm and tingly feeling down below.   But seriously. T100. P770. MC501. 223, 225, i59, etc.

I will say. Most of these I played in different shafts. And most of these were probably always different swing weights too.  So needless to say. Some I loved. Some I didn’t.  But recently I’ve found a shaft that I really like.  And I’d say probably some of what I didn’t like about some of them was probably just the shaft and swing weight.

that all said. I’m ready to settle down"

Not so sure you're really ready to settle down.

How would you rate and compare the i59 across the other irons you have tried??

been really curious about them. They seem to get so little love compared to the i230…. The i230 just seem to have to wide a sole for my taste…

I am the exact opposite of the OP.

I am still playing my Nike Pro Forged Combo Tours with X-100 shafts. I still hit it good, but I am in my mid-50's and keep threatening to treat myself to new irons for the next phase. I just hate the idea of starting with something new.

So, I look and play yet another season with the old clubs.

Some people really enjoy trying to improve their swing.

Some people really enjoy faffing about with new and different clubs all the time.

Golf encompasses a lot of different ways of enjoying what's basically the same game.

Just go get a proper fitting, not pga superstore or the like.  Pay for it.  And make the appointment for right after you play golf. No stopping for a quick one.  You’ll be the closest to how you really swing in the golf course. Most people thinks their standard shaft is stiff, and they want something they saw a pro on TV use, or my buddy plays this, or I hit one shot with that 5 iron, thats what I need.  Open minded, and listen to what you’re being told. If you’re not comfortable with the recommendation, go to another fitter, same routine, right after golf.  This will be way less expensive than buying 2-3 sets off the rack per year. And quit listening to ads on TV and elsewhere.
