Boo Weekley was probably the closest to a modern Hogan

Recommended Posts

There's a lot of similarities between Boo and Ben, their main difference being their grips, Ben's was weaker for a fade while Boo's was stronger for a draw. He did lead the tour in ball striking in back-to-back years in 2011 and 2012.

People bring up Jason Dufner a lot when it comes to a modern Hogan but his downswing shaft transition is too steep and he played pull-fades with the tendency to pull as a result. Not to mention he had a shorter backswing with less lag. Sergio is also mentioned but his right elbow doesn't keep up with his right hip in the downswing like Boo and Ben did so he'd get stuck and hit blocks/hooks.

Other than their grips, Boo's club face would be shut at the top while Ben's was more parallel to his left arm, which probably explains why he drew the ball for his stock shot. What kept Boo from winning a lot was putting, as he never once averaged positive strokes gained in putting for a season, much like Ben in his 50s.

While I love Boo's swing and personality and I do agree his top of the backswing position does resembles Hogan with the very connected look. And he is a very consistent swinger of the club. Their impact dynamic is different.

While Hogan used his pivot to sling the club past the ball with his right hand/arm unit releasing in concert with the pivot(releasing in the same plane as the pivot). Boo's dynamic is more of a right hand/arm unit slinging the club out along the target line similar to most pga touring caliber swing but better in a sense that Boo does not stall his pivot similar to Hogan. This along with the flat and connected look of the swing is how they are similar.

But it is worth noting that due to his strong grip, it would make more sense for him to release that way to hit his stock draw. For Boo to release his right hand/arm unit exactly like Hogan will surely produce a hook more often than not due to his grip. And if you notice, at impact most of the footage will show Boo's left wrist be more of a "knife's edge position" while Hogan left wrist was always be flat to slightly bowed(yes yes, cause Hogan grip is weak) through impact.

As per these images for reference:

And yes I know the Hogan images is of him hitting an iron in a somewhat semi-knock down fashion. But for his full all out swing with the driver the dynamic wasn't that much different. With the driver Hogan's arms will be stretched out towards the ball and away from his body a little more due to the length of the driver.

But I could also be wrong about this as well. Cheers!

I don't see Duf or Boo have the transition(right to left) like Hogan on the downswing through the ball. Boo's transition is a little closer to Hogan's transition but not as athletic(or flexible) as Hogan. Dufner's hip rotation is very quick on the downswing and is not in any way resembling Hogan's hip rotation(not sway). Hogan's hip rotation, a very athletic one at that, utilizing his knees is what set's him apart from the rest.

I’d argue Boo’s backswing and downswing along with a weaker grip so the club face would be parallel to the left arm at the top of the backswing, and Graham Delaet’s post-impact would be the closest thing to Hogan today.

Both Boo Weekley and Graham DeLaet led the tour in the ball striking stat (total driving + GIR, Boo in 2011 and 2012, DeLaet in 2013). Boo definitely had limber wrists, he had the same amount of lag Hogan did or close, just the rest of his body wasn’t as flexible.
