A buddy of mine was recently complaining about how expensive golf grips have gotten, and he said it would cost him more than his current set is worth (they’re 10 years old) to get them regripped. I told him there are some decent budget grips out there but he’s convinced they are all garbage. So anyways, I was just curious what most people have as their budget for a new grip (not including installation)? And what is everyone’s favorite grip for the money?

I've pretty much exclusively used plain old Lamkin Crosslines forever. I have always liked them because of their longevity - easily get three seasons out of them even when the clubs sit in my hot car all summer.

That said, they're now priced at over triple what I used to pay for them. Yeah, it's been a long time since they were that cheap, but most other items we buy - even in the golf world - have not tripled in cost over that same period. And here I'm speaking of prices before our most recent bit of overall economic inflation.

So, I've been giving a set of Karma grips a go in their "Velour" model - which is their version of a Crossline or GP Tour Velvet. They've now got a full season on them (same conditions) and are still going fine. I won't know for a while if they will ultimately last as long as Crosslines. We'll see, but so far so good.

For me, this is almost more about being a bit annoyed at Lamkin and Golf Pride at the price increases rather than the overall absolute cost for my golf-related expenditures (which is fairly trivial). But they gave me an excuse to go looking elsewhere so I'm doing so. In the meantime, the experiment continues.

Some online stores are

charging as much as $15-20 per stick for tour velvets.  That’s crazy talk!

I recently took a chance on KNLY grips on Amazon. They arrived and I have played a few rounds with them and they are great. The ones I purchased are very much like crosslines except much cheaper to buy. Time will tell how they last.

I play leather grips, so I don't fit on that poll. But IMHO, they are the most ECONOMICAL option as far as grips go. Not to mention all the other benefits.

It depends on how long I expect them to last. Something like a Tour Velvet that's going to be showing slick spots after a 100-200  rounds I have a hard time spending more than $10 or so. If it were a more durable grip that I'd expect to get several years out of I'd be willing to spend maybe $15-$20 but I'd sure rather not if I don't have to.

Tour Velvet user for decades. Gave the Karma Velour a shot this year when Rock Bottom had them for under $2 a grip. Can honestly say all in all they were no worse than the TV. Probably lost their life a tad bit earlier but at less than 1/3 the price I can live with that.

Only reason I even looked to change was TV went over $6, so I guess that's my line.

Tried the tour velvet cords for my last set and wasn't crazy about them. Prefer regular tour velvet but my go-to are always GP multi-compound. Last time I bought them they were around $8 per grip. Looks to be around $12 per now.

Wait for a sale at iomic and load up.  They seem to last forever and the ones I use the x evolutions are usually about nine for some reason.  They are firm.  If you like soft get the stickies but I dont think they last as well and are usually a bit more.  .

Every golfer at some point in their quest to embrace this game should learn some basic club building skills, and regripping your own sticks is about as basic and satisfying as it gets. Buy quality grips and get rid of the installation costs. If you have an air compressor in the garage for your car tires your biggest initial outlay is already paid for.

Why would I need an air compressor to put on or take off grips? They come off with a knife and back on by sliding over some tape and grip tape spray.  If I want to reuse a grip I have an old drill bit that I spray with tape spray that I slide down inside the grip, spin it around the shaft and it releases the tape with a couple more drops down the grip.

You’re both right so let’s leave the installation how to talk for another thread.  🙂

Diamond Tour Golf DTG velvet style are cheap and feel good when new.  Larger lower hand.  Like most cheapies, they will go bad sooner.  So installing yourself is the way to go with cheapies.

Thanks hall monitor.

I recognize everyone has their budget, but to complain about costs for what he considers 'good' grips and then say the ones in his price range are 'garbage' (plus not having bought clubs in 10 years) shows he has no clue as to what happened to prices over 10 years. Show him what it will cost him to replace his current set with brand new clubs, but say to him 'they'll have new grips!'. He'll then figure out new replacement grips are a deal compared to new clubs.

I've cut back in a major way on my club ho'ing, gradually over the past couple years. I guess that got me out of the loop of prices. Clubs, grips, all this stuff is so expensive now I'm just resolved to wear my grips out before changing them and to keep clubs until I wear the grooves off.

Years ago, from time to time I'd order like 10 grips and put them on my irons and wedge, try them for a couple months and if I weren't liking them I'd order something different. That sort of experiment costs a small fortune now.

This train of thought is like a word for word explanation/justification from a salesmen for the grip company...  Inflation aside, the price of grips and basic steel shafts have gone WAY above what they should cost.

When GP NDMC came out up here ('04), they were $7.95 CDN a grip.  Today, $17.75 CDN.  A basic DG shaft was over priced at $19.99 CDN not even 10 years ago, now, $38 CDN...

Even at a full price of $12.50 the X-evolution hasn’t gone up in price like a lot of other brands and wears much better than traditional rubber grips.

ive tried many, many grips from lots of different companies over the years and i have found my way back to the lambskin crosslines for the last few years.

I never think about them while playing because they just work for me.  I still have a drawer full of other grips in my garage from back when i used to test them out.

Actually just picked these up off of Amazon after reading some reviews. Figured why not for $26 for a set of 13. Just received them and only put one on and I actually love the way it feels. Weighed all 13 grips and all were within 1 gram and no terrible smell. They are a firmer grip with lots of texture.

Always check in at golfworks. They run sales on the Royal grips, pretty regularly.

right now they’ve got a Taylormade 360 grip for a decent price, if that’s to your liking.

my favorite grip is the GP CP2 Pro. At $10 a grip they’re pricey but the level of comfort, is well worth it (for my joints).
