What did I just find -- anyone know more history on these?! The shafts are some sort of green coating with corded grips...

Based on the Kaplan book those are 1942.

The green coating is pyratone, which was used on steel shafts before chrome. It became popular in the mid 30s and lasted into the early 40s, when chrome shafts started to phase it out.

 

Pyratone clubs are cool. I have the same exact set you have and they are in my keep forever pile. I haven't hit them yet, but will play them at least once next year.

 

Do be careful, pyratone is fragile after all these years and will chip. It's rare to find a shaft that has 100% of its original coating.

 

Now you need to find a pyratone Iron Master putter, which is one of the great collectable putters of all time. When I play my Armours next year, I'll bring my pyratone Iron Master out for the day.

Great find, I love these irons! Timelessly classic headshape.

The 3852 is code for 38.5" 2 iron.

They also feature the "neutraliser" hosel insert which is a hickory insert to reinforce the hosel/shaft joint and absorb impact vibration. This supposedly made the joint unbreakable and may have been aimed to give confidence in these new fangled (at the time) steel shafts. My guess is they just broke at the top of the insert instead!

I am not sure the olive green coating is pyratone. Pyratone is a thick plastic like finish, the olive is more like a painted finish as these close ups reveal.

Grips are great too. I have those on a set of 905's - still very playable after all these years.

Enjoy them, they are fabulous irons.

Pleasure. Can't tell you anything about the putter beyond it being an Ironmaster head which you probably already know but it is very cool!
