Matsuda Golf Clubs

Recommended Posts

"Good evening, I have some old Matsuda brand clubs with good looks and that might be interesting for collectors. I tried to Google more about this brand but I didn't find anything. I think they are Japanese. Does anyone know?"

I don't know either but I agree that they're probably Japanese.  They definitely have that look about them.  I think they look pretty cool myself.  There are a few vintage Japanese gear folks here that will likely chime in.

Those look superb. Matsuda reappeared in the UK in the late 80s and early 90s. Expensive but poor quality.

They do look great, don't they?

This got me thinking about older Japanese golf clubs. I don't think I've seen anything from the pre-war period come up for sale, and very little from the 40s, 50s, and 60s.

One simple explanation is that golf was very expensive, and not widespread in the Thirties. For example, the oldest course in the prefecture I live (Kyushu's most populous prefecture) started post-war (Koga, in 1953).

Another reason is probably that most Japanese golfers at the time preferred US and British clubs. Bearing in mind that only the very wealthy could play, it's not hard to imagine them being prepared to pay top-yen for imported clubs.

But I think there's another reason: the War. I pretty damn certain that a lot of sets got melted down for the war effort (didn't this happen in Britain as well?), and that's why we don't see many pre-war Japanese clubs around.

I do know that golf courses were turned into farms during the war, and foundries that previously made iron heads turned production to war materials (including swords for officers).

Just spitballing.

For the English speakers - "Thanks for the responses, I'd like to find out more about this brand. These clubs were together in a bag of forgan hickory clubs. They must be old."

Lovely clubs, by the way.

I really like the look of those woods.  I could definitely play those.  I wonder what the quality of the wood is like?  It's probably just a trick of the camera but next to the ferrules the color almost looks like a very deep blue, which I am finding curiously attractive.

I think those Gene Littler irons would be a store-line short set so the quality probably isn’t there but I really like the shape of those too.  All quite interesting stuff!
