If you're over 160 ballspeed

I work out irregularly but i’m just fat and out of shape. This is the heaviest I’ve ever been😩

Bench is one of the areas I really struggle with as I have a bird chest and longer than my height wingspan. My 1rm in that is 180.

I don’t squat with much weight as I’m afraid of injury. I prefer trap bar deadlift…410 1rm for that.

I read Bill Miller’s swing fast book and added a bunch of medicine ball work using my PUSH Band.

This past season I’ve worked with Steve Furlonger who is one of the foremost GFR experts via online lessons..3 of them..he fantastic..highly recommend and he’s on skillest.

My speed training this past season consisted of working on what Steve has pointed out as issues which I have a lot and 2 all out driver speed sessions of about 50 balls a piece per week.

As far as I can tell almost all my gains came from 4 changes…using my ribs to take the club back and forwards, pushing using my left leg way more and earlier in downswing, and learning to move COP past COM on the downswing and change of intent to psycho mode with the driver. Those pretty much got me around 14 mph ball speed.

Overall I have no “special” qualities that I can tell but I’ve always been on the longer side of the average player 5 handicap of less.

Bench press is the least important to be strong in for golf/speed.  The most important are squat and deads.  From many years of experience myself and with clients, I've found that if you can bench 150, squat and dead 225, you're g2g.  It's actually more important to get better at moving more weight proficiently for Olympic lifts IMO since they incorporate both speed and power.

I left out deads on purpose when I asked about training and 1rm. The guys at par4success have noted that chest press and ohp does correlate to speed. Maybe not as much as squat and deads and rotational stuff.

I just can't do deads anymore. Too many instances of lower back strains from them and bent over bbell rows. Even my cleans are done as hang cleans not full cleans.

However, I'll say, anecdotally, I was doing keto for 3 months until 2.5 weeks ago. The only muscle group that saw significant strength decline was chest. My 1rm dropped from around 205 to about 185. My swing speed also decreased by 3-5 mph. Maybe it's how I swing the club. I tend to be more upper body dominant...lower body stability. Maybe that's why chest strength seems to correlate more for me...? Idk.

I'm working to get stronger and more powerful across the board. Need to get driver back to 110 or higher. My 3w is right at 100mph right now. The lowest it's ever been. I'm not ready to concede to age just yet.

Bill Miller also says that chest strength is important for swing speed, granted he seems to work primarily with baseball player so the more horizontal plane may make a bit of difference.

Justin James is a big proponent of pushing the club down and you can tell he doesn’t miss many chest days.

Back in 2019 I had Ryan Steenburg write me a workout plan, it didn’t have any bench press type of exercises but there were a lot of land mine push presses. I still do those to this day and I love all rotational variations that can be achieved.

How much speed do you think a guy who is below those numbers can gain by getting to those standards?

Right now, I can only bench 135 and squat 175. Can deadlift into the mid 300's though.

Really depends.  Maybe 5 mph more ball speed.

It is fun to read all these speed numbers and read about how to better increase speed. It is truly amazing what can be achieved, I see 50 yrs or so seems to be the high end age wise and having never had numbers even close to 160 mph and now at nearly 64 there is no hope of anything even slightly impressive.

But I do enjoy Golfing with folks that can really put it out there, but I will say I have never seen in many years anyone (well one) person who could control that type of speed in Muni Golf for more than one or two holes, then it is looking in the woods or just tee another one since it is so far in the woods there is no point to looking.

But then again the cap range seems to favor low singles or less for those that listed so you have more talent than the average person already.

I plan to be a little less thicc at some point :P.

I got up to 230 at one point and it sucked, lol.  Was in the off season before doing a body building show.  Sleep apnea, felt like s*** all day and playing golf was a challenge, haha.  I was taking every thing supplement wise under the sun and that didn't help matters any.  I feel and perform my best in the 170 to 180 range which is where I'm at right now.  Won't ever go over 180 again.

I’ve bulked a few times as well, you get too bloated feeling and can’t maintain it either. Bryson was walking around drinking 50 crappy protein drinks in a bottle everyday, he was a bloated mess.

Just as a note, I got over 160 ball speed for the first time in my life a week ago and it was because I was testing out a senior flex shaft. I hit 160.1, 163.5, 163, 160.7 in 10 swings with and not even trying to get MAX ballspeed.

My max ballspeed ever with my stiff shaft is 159.6. So there is that.

There should be a club within this club (which I am not a part of) that you get into if your ballspeed exceeds your weight. That, to me, is impressive for some reason.

I don't have access to a trackman and had a radar but it broke, haha but based on my max s.s. with my 3 wood (no driver) and an estimated smash factor of  1.48 (it's a 3deep):

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.
