Better Players with Yellow Ball?

FormerBigDaddy

Recommended Posts

So I read somewhere that the color yellow stands out more to the human eye than white. I belong to a club and play at my home course like 95% of the time. Despite knowing my typical landing spots, I still lose balls in the rough regularly. Part of that is bc I’m a walker and another is that this time of year I play alone a lot.

Was thinking of giving some yellow prov1x’s or tp5x’s a shot but part of me feels like it’s a high HC move. I play to an 8 currently and if it helped me find balls more often I’d get over it fast.

Any better players make the switch and have it stick?

I fluctuate between a +1 and 1. I like the yellow ball, especially in the fall because of the course I play and the amount of leaves on the ground. I do,however, swear the yellow feels different in all aspects to its white counter part.

I’ve written about it a couple of times. Never thought I would switch but I forced myself to give it a go and will never go back. Both my main playing partner and myself aren’t eagle eyed and yellow balls have been a game changer. I think it has saved us strokes however minimal. Another plus is just finding and identifying your ball quicker which makes things alittle less stressful. Got my handicap to a new best 2 and shot my best round ever this year with a yellow ball.

As long as my ball is not black or blue ill play any color. You wouldnt believe if i said pink is actually the best most visually findable color. Found a lady callaway once and played it a few holes was very suprised to learn other then saying lady and being pink it plays exactly the same as mens super softs. I mainly have a mix of white red yellow green and orange. I dont mind the colored balls at all. I wouldnt buy pink but if i found another callaway pink id definitely pick it up lol

No shame in colored ball i almost perfer it. Before anyone knocks superhot or supersoft callaway golf ball i shot 79 with some so they cant be all that bad. Everytime i have a nice round it seems to be with them too. Overall a great ball. We arent on tour.. play what pleases you. If your a good player or not no one cares if your playing a colored ball.

Yellow balls are legit.

I play with a mini tour guy a lot… he frequently has the yellow AVX.

a top 100 pro in the area also uses them…. Yellow pro v1

….. I use them and love them.

i also use the Vice Red or Shade balls this time of year. They stand out better in the fall in the NE.

Guys named Fred Couples and Bubba Watson play a yellow ball.

😂😂😂😂😂😂. Too funny. I play Vice lime green because I can spot my ball out in the fairway quicker when I play with guys who play white golf balls. Even when I play with guys who play yellow golf balls, the lime green just stands out more. That’s it. Don’t really notice and advantage or a drop off in comparison to when I played TP5’s so made the switch. You might be on to something though because ever since I started playing Vice like green Pro plus balls, my handicap did creep up a little.

Even in yellow leaves, a yellow ball is brighter and stands out. Sometimes my ball ends up in the leaves.

I'm not a low handicap but plenty nerdy when it comes to some things.  Scientifically, 555 nanometer wavelength light is the most visible light to human eyes.  It's a neon green color like lime colored Vice balls and Oncore's green golf balls. Green would be the best, yellow would probably be second best.

I can find that ball anywhere. Weird thing how your knowledge came about that. I always think about switching back to the TP or even try out the Prov’s but just love seeing the golf ball quickly.

More like a personal preference.

Any color of the ball works for me, as long as it is not a rainbow...

Loads of players on champions tour going yellow. I am a high speed, low handicap and play a Z Star / XV in yellow. Wouldnt go back.

I had the same issue with losing white balls in the rough, since switching about 2 years ago I havent lost one just off the fairway... (still cant find them when they are over the fence or in someones garden but you win some you lose some! )

I'm just confused what handicap and ball colour have to do with one another?  The whole point of the different colours is for easier visibility not for scoring better or worse.  I'm not a good player by many of your standards but I also prefer the hi-vis balls, currently working my way through the last couple dozen of some Srixon Z-Star X Yellows I bought 5 years ago.  My favourite ball is the TP5-X, I wish they made a Yellow Pix ball, then for sure nobody would mistake it.

I have weird colour vision problems, and according to the docs I don’t seem to see as many shades of certain colours as other people.

I guess it’s something to do with depth perception, but I play better with a yellow ball. I noticed this when I was consistently striking it better at a range with yellow balls than in my store’s net where we used white.

I also find the Pix balls better too.

I’m 70, current index is 5.5, and I’ve had a ton of eye trouble over the last 5 years.

Several years ago I went to a Champions Tour tournament, and realized that at least a third of those guys were using colored golf balls, mostly yellow.  I also realized that I could see the colored balls in the air far, far better than the white ones.

I stopped at Golf Galaxy on the way home and bought a dozen yellow balls, and I’ve never used a white ball again.  I don’t know that yellow is necessarily easier to find than white, but for sure yellow is easier to follow in the air, and I think the yellow cover is cosmetically more durable.

Except TaylorMade. I found their covers to be terrible, don’t hold up nearly as well as Srixon and Titleist. Snell is also very good. I haven’t tried Maxfli.

Same! Especially in the fall. That Vice lime green is easily the most visible ball to my eyes.

I can’t always see the ball land off the driver anymore. A yellow ball cuts down on the time looking for it.
I don’t think a yellow ball has anything to do with handicap but I understand the stigma of a non traditional colored ball in some circles; there’s always been a lot of posturing in golf.

Take a look at the second graph at this link:

https://www.physicsclassroom.com/class/light/Lesson-2/Visible-Light-and-the-Eye-s-Response

They don't put a number on there, but you can see that the green cone sensitivity is higher than the red or blue and it peaks about half way between 500 nm and 600 nm.
