13 clubs

Golfer currently carries 13 clubs. What would you add next?

 

Driver, 5 wood, 7 wood

5 hybrid 

6-9 irons

PW, GW, SW, LW

Putter

Is there a gap between the 7 wood and 5 hybrid?

 

Nothing says you have to have 14 clubs. I play a lot of rounds with either 8 or 12 clubs.

Both 7 wood and 5 hybrid are 24 degrees

thinking about a 50* wedge but would mean I have to update my wedge set to 50/54/58. Most likely keep things as is, 52/58

But woods generally have longer shafts than hybrids, which may go farther. It's about how you swing the clubs.

I'd add a second 60* wedge. I'd have a high and low bounce  and a 56 in the middle

We've already determined, through gapping and/or comfort, that there's no point in the golfer trying a 3W? 

 

4H seems like a possibility; again, depending on gapping.

I'd leave it alone. I'm at 12 clubs and have no problems getting around the course with the gapping I currently have. If that setup is working for you and you're not seeing situations where you're stuck in between clubs/distances, I say keep going.

In another post that he started, he mention that driver SS is around 70 mph with driver.

Yep 12 is usually SOP for me too--- I know I am sorta odd ball on here because I only carry 2 wedges--- Hey whatever works

If that is true, he doesn't have the swing speed to effectively use a 3W. If he is insistent on adding a club, I would add another, more lofted hybrid.

I wouldn't add anything. I play 13 and could swap my 4w and 7w out for a 5w, going to 12, and score similarly at most places I play. I could add a wedge but the 48, 54, 60 set up I'm using is the best my short game has been.

I currently play 13 clubs and was thinking what to add as well

I was thinking a 3 wood for short par 4's or a 5 hybrid for long par 3's

Some people suggested to me to add a Mini Driver but I don't see the difference between a Mini Driver and a 3 wood.

 

I added nothing because I never found myself in a situation where I was reaching for a club I do not have.

In the camp of 'do you need 14 clubs?'

 

I played 13 clubs for many years. I could have forced another club, but it just would have been a bag ornament.  Clubs should be dictated by need rather than feeling like you have to fill 14 slots. And based on the realistic nature of your game. I carried a 3-wood for years when I'd use it maybe once every few months.  Same with my lob wedge. Some guys are great with it. It gets me into trouble more often than it helps me.

My 3W tends to be my "fairway finder" and I seem to turn to it more and more as I get older.  I also know guys that carry 2 putters, a blade and mallet, depending on how they feel at that day or even that moment.

I've gone for long periods playing 11, 12 or 13 clubs. Sometimes I've got all my distances covered and just don't need anything else. 

 

I don't think you need to feel a need to carry the max just because. Unless you can think of some type of shot your 13-club bag won't easily cover then you don't need a 14th.

Thanks.  My vote is for another hybrid then.  Or a super-lob wedge if that would be more useful.

I would add and older type club that you can use to punch out of less favorable material. I took a trip to Las Vegas not too long ago and if you were off the second cut of rough off the fairway, you were in desert dirt with pebbles and rocks. I was thinking if I had an old beat up 7 iron to be able to punch it out or even get some good yardage out of it would of been great. It’s a good option if you feel like the bag is pretty much complete.

This ☝️- a low lofted punch out club if you need it. 
 

Or nothing. Seems like a pretty good set up as is but only you can answer that.

Soemtimes you don't need 14.  Since the UW has been added to my bag my 3w is more or less a decoration in the bag.  I believe I've used it once, maybe twice, but otherwise it's become an irrelevant club.

A 3 hybrid, or even a 2h, will give you a bit of distance over the 5w as well as being easy to hit.  You’re already carrying 4 wedges, so you don’t need more options at that end of the bag.  
 

The other possibility that jumps out at me is a 4h, but that may be because it’s the best club in my bag.

More important to cover the yardages you see most frequently at the courses you play. Once you got that sorted, see how many slots you got left and fluff from there.

For 2023 I'm going:

 

Driver

17* UW 

23* driving iron 

5-PW, 50*, 54*, 58*, putter

 

That solves anything off the tee for me. I'm thinking of also getting rid of a wedge and going with a pw (46*), 52* and 58* for 12 clubs.

Maybe try a driving/utility iron? Doesn't seem like you really have a reliable fairway finder for longer holes, especially in windy conditions

Pretty much same here too!  12 or 13 tops for me.  Carry 50*/56* in the modern bag and with the Mac's or Pings the PW is 50* which means I only carry a sand wedge.
