Putter with very upright stock lie?

Recommended Posts

I've recently discovered that, because of the way I like to angle my wrists, I putt best with a very upright lie angle on my putter. Doing a bit of self-fitting, I would like to try something with a lie angle of 75 or higher. I've tried to get one of my current putters bent, but no one I've talked to feels confident that they can bend it 5 degrees up without damaging the shaft. I even reached out to Taylormade about sending my Spider X back to them over the winter, but they will only take it up to 72 degrees.

Is there a putter that has that upright of a lie angle as a stock option? I've looked at Sik putters, and I know that you can order them new at 75 degrees, but that price is a little steep for just an experiment.

I know that I should just get a fitting, but there isn't really a good place here in Central PA to get one, so I'm looking primarily at the Used market (2nd Swing, eBay, etc.). TIA.

You could try finding an arm lock putter and playing around with the weight of the putter head. I know that my local Golf Galaxy was able to bend the Odyssey Double Wide armlock putter up to 78 degrees. It comes stock at 72. You could start there, cut it down, and remove the weights if the head is too heavy.

I think CURE still makes an adjustable lie angle putter.

Id reach out to Sub70 as well. (American company out of Illinois (I think)).    Their stock putter starts at 72*.  Maybe they can put something together for you.  Excellent price too.

I've sung its praises here before, but I found the iPing app very helpful for fitting like this.  And it recommended a 74 degree lie for me, which is admittedly still short of what you want.

I also mention these guys more than anyone not getting paid by them should, but L.A.B. Golf's Outlet has putters available in the 79 degree range and more.  They're used, but that means they're often 1/2 as much as it'd cost to buy from them new.

Buy something cheap and forged/milled on eBay like $50 like a Never Compromise or older Mizuno. Find a good golf shop, get them to bend it to 75, tell them you understand it could snap. If it does you're out a few buck, but this will be the cheapest way to go about it under $100.

I thought of doing something like that, but the guy that usually does my club work said he doesn't have the piece needed to hold the putter in his bending vise.

He did say that a certain type of Rife putter used to come with a device that you could bend the lie angle yourself, but I can't find a ton of information about that.

"+1" on Cure putters.. or consider a used/2nd-hand "Happy Putter"? Or a cut-down belly/broomstick putter? (plenty on ebay/marketplace)

it was the Rife 2 bar putters and the tool was the Rife LieAline adjustment tool.   They pop up occasionally on eBay.  Google search will give you pictures and some demo videos.

Yeah was going to add LAB. I use a 73° angle. Definitely harder to find.

Buy one of these and you’ll be able to play any lie or loft angle you want on a putter. I like a 73* or 74* lie angle and bought this out of frustration 4 years ago.

I may go that route at some point but I'd still be a little apprehensive about trying to bend it the 4 or 5 degrees that I would want.

I’ve bent several putters up to 75.  In my bag today is an Odyssey Jailbird Mini that I bent from 70 to 75.  It is the version that has the shaft installed over a peg.  Photo below.

Most putters are cast of soft metal.  If the have a hosel, it bends pretty easily.  Or you can get one with a double bend shaft and bend the shaft.

A lot of these can be done with just a vice to hold the head. Protect the head with masking tape, and some wood scraps between the head and the jaws of the vise.

If the hosel has a square profile, put a small crescent wrench on it, then use a bigger one on the handle of the first one to move the hosel in a straight line.

Or just push or pull on the shaft with both hands.  Lower if you are trying to bend the hosel or peg such as on my putter.  Higher if you are bending the shaft bend.

I have done all of the above, and they came out fine.

Shop some thrift stores for something to try it on.  Golfworks will bend you a shaft at 75 degrees and sell you a high quality head or finished putter.  Really, the possibilities are endless.

@jcvandamme I have a LAB DF 2.1 that’s 77* and 35” (I’m told) and I put a wrist lock grip on it. I like it well enough, but I came across another DF with my more traditional setup and I’m loving that one. PM me if you’d be interested in buying the upright one. I still have the OEM Press grip and putter cover for it and we can talk about one or the other or both grips if of interest.

I actually just bought one from the LAB Outlet website that someone mentioned earlier. I went with a 75 degree lie angle to start with. Should be here Friday or Saturday.

Still might try to find a place for a fitting over the winter. I think I'll have to head to Philly or Delaware for it though.

I sort of did that, bought an old Odyssey Metal X #1 belly putter for $20 that somebody had bent and added loft to make it an Armlock and I wanted to experiment with armlock putting.  Never felt totally comfortable with the armlock thing, partly since it was too flat.   I then very scientifically stepped on the hosel and tried to bend it more upright.  Years ago I putted with an old Bullseye that was super upright, probably 75 or 76 degrees and I wanted to try that sort of thing again.   I have no idea what I got it bent to, but it is much more upright, still a lot of loft.   It was just something to play with, I was only out $20 bucks.

Overall it wasn't that bad really, almost thought of taking it to somebody to cut it down and make it a standard putter.

If it is a putter without a hosel you could remove the shaft, fill the hole with a metal filler and then drill the hole at 90-degrees. I've used metal fillers before for other things and they can be sanded, drilled and tapped. For a putter, it'd be easy considering there's not much stress on the putter in terms of torque or force....

Would be non-conforming though...
