Tan Shorts…yes or no?

In the 90s and 00s tan shorts were a staple of my golf wardrobe.  However, after doing a closet cleaning recently I noticed that all of my shorts now are blues and greys.  Do people 45 and under wear tan shorts anymore?

I have a pair of khaki shorts, I don’t have them in rotation as often as others but I do still wear them. (32 years old)

Tan shorts are the hoody of golf attire! Some will love them. Others will loathe them. Especially so if they are Magnum PI short!

I will say I am not far + or - from your age cutoff. I used to only wear khaki colored shorts from the time I started playing golf in the mid 1990s until maybe 3 years ago. I think in the mid 2000s I had one yellow pair of shorts but that was as far as I branched out beyond khaki. Then 3 years ago I finally started branching out into various shades of grey shorts, followed by various shades of blue shorts. I really like the look of those now.  Currently, khaki is only about 1/4 of my shorts collection. I have some shirts that seem to look better with khaki than other colors so I can't see myself phasing them out completely, but I won't be buying more khaki shorts unless the current ones get worn out. The khaki ones I do have are modern synthetic Adidas Ultimate 365 shorts, not some circa 2004 pleated cotton Polo Golf ones (which I used to have back then...)

As a ginger, khaki is a favorite color for me. Add a black top and you're good to go. Only downside is wearing a navy blue or red top and feeling like a Walmart/Target associate lol.

I have shorts of different colors, but I have about half in tan for two reasons:

• An easy color to blend with different golf shirt and shoe colors. And, khaki doesn't show dirt stains like cream or light gray.
• I have volunteered at seven national-level golf tournaments in the St. Louis area since 2009. Khaki or tan seems to be universal uniform color for trousers and shorts for volunteers.

Khaki is nice neutral color that will allow you to wear virtually any color/style of top.

To me tan and khaki are two different colors. Khaki being lighter and tan being much darker. I have both in the rotation but I wear shades of navy, grey, and pops of color more. I do like the darker shade of tan pants that Rory sometimes wears and my shorts sort of match those. I think you do have to pair it with the right shirt and as long as they’re above the knee and fitted they’re fine.

I am 42 and same here.  Switched to greys. Nothing ram for me anymore.  Pants or shorts.

No khaki here and haven't owned a pair for probably 10 years. 

 

I do think if you go the super short and tight "I never skip leg day" route you can probably pull them off these days, but that's not me!

Oh man, Mid to late 90's when I started playing, you had to have khakis. Hell, up to like 5 years ago I was wearing them (47 years old). I mostly wear greys and blues with an occasional green, black, cream, etc. In my opinion, navy blue is just as easy as khakis were to match. They go with just about anything. I still have a handful of khakis in my closet, but I haven't pulled any out in a while.

when i was in my 30's most of my shorts were khaki/tan colored with a couple pairs of grey shorts. I'm 45 now and I maybe wear 1 pair of khaki shorts specifically for golfing. Everything else is different shades gray, blue, black, salmon, and patterns. If i wasn't 100% sure i'd stain or get them dirty after the 1st hole i'd even wear white shorts. I'm not against wearing khaki/tan there's just so many other choices out there. At least i stopped wearing cargo shorts 🤣

Current shorts rotation includes two pair of khaki (or tan?), one pair of grey, and one pair of navy. I'm not really sure why you wouldn't have a pair of khaki shorts. Unlike other colors they literally can be worn with any color shirt.

 

Personally, I avoid all of the "other" colors especially the pastel/pale ones. I'm not trying to look like an Easter egg out there on the course.

Sure.  I prefer stone and similar shades more often but it never occurred to me that khaki was somehow out of style.
