All things equal, are you more likely to get a flyer out of rough with an iron or hybrid?

When I get a Bermuda lie that looks like a possible flyer, if it's a wedge I'd say it happens about 1/2 of the time, it if's a short iron it happens about 1/4 of the time and if it's a mid-iron or hybrid maybe one time in ten, if that. Seems to entirely be a high-lofted club thing for me.

 

My approach angle into the ball is so shallow, I think the mid-irons and hybrids get slowed down too much by the grass to even give me a chance of a flyer.

Wait, I thought flyers only happen b/c of hot spots on GI clubs (shovels)? That’s why Westwood hasn’t won a major, b/c of all the flyers he hits with his Pings. 😂

I've never had a flier with hybrid.  Then again, I rarely hit hybrid from the rough.  I grab my DI instead.  I do see the logic in your post though.

My experience has show that irons produce a lot more flyers than irons.

I tell you, with as short as I feel that I’m hitting my irons, I wish I could hit a few flyers. Lol.

Most likely a hybrid because of vertical gear effect.  Strike a bit high on the face and it would gear lower spin, maybe a higher launch (loft for loft vs iron) because of CG being relatively lower and rearward, and if the hybrid face has some roll to it.  Irons would have less gear effect, pretty minimal depending how far back the CG is.

 

Out of rough depends on delivery and impact conditions with how much grass and water get caught affecting friction, spin, and launch.

Not for me. In my experience, irons produce way fewer flyers than irons. And it's not even close.
