Honma TW-X  from 2020

They can be found for cheap online.

This is the winner. New sets were selling for $500 recently. Great clubs.

I noticed that in 2021 and was shocked

I hit them along side Mizuno HMB’s and Cobra Forged Tec when I was tested my some head and shaft combos

I ended up with the HMB’s due to loft progression and have since bent my 5,6,7,8 weak, but I did like the Honma, in fact, my 50* GW is a Honma TW-World. I liked it better than the Mizuno and it blended well with the HMB’s

As I see it “players distance irons” is marketing speak for clubs that behave like GI or even SGI clubs in a smaller envelope, the smaller envelope having supposedly been made possible by advances in “technology” such as “hotter” faces (actually thinner faces with less mass that allow the weight to be manipulated).

As such, and since we are talking more about marketing and reality such clubs did not exist prior to the tech, when GI clubs had to have a relatively large package.

All of which really doesn’t matter much since you can get all the MOI you can practically use in a moderate sized cavity back, and you’re actually better off In the long run without the COG manipulation.

Any moderately sized cavity back since say 2005 will do you just as good as anything else.

You’ll probably get whole bunch of opinions here (mine would be the Srixon 5 series or check out the DTC’s) but this ☝️is the right answer. Pick one that suits your eye and let ‘er rip.

Titleist TS
Titleist 915F 5W and TSi 7W

Srixon ZX5 w/ Recoil 95
Bettinardi - 56 & 60
Piretti Forza
Titleist AVX

I have two older ones that I like - Titleist AP3 (my steel shafted set) and TM RSi2 (my graphite shafted set).  Both are progressive sets that look good to me at address, feel good on solid strikes and grant me some forgiveness beyond what I deserve (both have pretty high MOI numbers given their size).

If you want to go old and cheap, consider a set of Hogan Apex Edge Pros from the early 2000s.  You could get something that profiles very similarly to the ZX5 and feels like a Mizuno for probably under $200.

"+1" on the Hogan Apex Edge Pros. Bonus = these are gorgeous (albeit beauty = in the eye of the beholder)

Haha, that's my bag in the picture!  I've updated a bit since then.  New putter, and swapped the CBX wedges with an Edge Pro 50* F wedge and RTX 54 and 58, but the irons are still getting all the run they can handle.  I think they're getting reshafted this winter as the shafts are getting pretty old.  The 9 iron shaft literally peeled in half during one of my rounds this summer.

I've hit T100s, T200s, ZX5s, ZX7s, Mizuno 221s, etc.  They're all fine, but nothing's been so overwhelmingly better that it makes me want to kick out the Hogans.

I also agree with you on looks.  What a sharp set of irons.

Glad to see some Wilson shouts, they have churned out so many great sets of irons in all the categories, I dont know how they are not more popular.

Just means those that know can grab absolute steals when they plummet as they dont hold their value at all.

The TM RSI and the 2018 Cobra forged tec are goodies too.

Srixon Z545 as some have mentioned.  Mine were purchased when they were first released years ago around 2015.  I was a 12 hcp at the time and they have been with me on the journey to a 4.  The 545’s are the only part of my bag that have not changed during this time.  Hitting irons better and longer than ever at 45 years old and no plans to change.  Have a set of Macgregor 1025 M blades to play for fun on occasion but it’s the 545’s for scoring rounds.
