Upgrading irons to less forgiving ones?

Get the blades. They will force you to concentrate more and improve your ball striking. Once your iron play is pure, you will have more time to practice tee shots and putting. They will really elevate your game, those P790s are holding you back

Yeah, the 'will make you concentrate more' is right up there 'blades will teach you how to improve your swing' in GolfWRX lore.

ย

Like the club is going to tap you on the shoulder and tell you 'hey, you're dropping under plane on your downswing.ย  You should feel your hips open to start your transition. You're welcome.'

ย

Or we could all be single digits, if we'd just find a way to concentrate a little bit harder over each shot.

Sometimes reading about an idea, no matter how absurd it is justifies a purchase in wrx land.ย  I've been guilty of it in the past and hope to prevent it in the future.

ย

@sparky1_2007 thanks for starting the thread.ย  Sorry about all the grief you've gotten but there is some good advice sprinkled in with the grief.

ย

I'm also curious as to how you eventually get along with your new purchase once you've played them for a few rounds.

Had this "debate" with someone recently. Who after I'd pointed this out, decided to instead move the goalposts. Interestingly it was about 50/50 when surveying many current PD and blade irons. Sometimes the blades had a lower COG, and vise versa. But ultimately, the difference was pretty negligible across the board.

Or we can be objective and honest about our game and play more with appropriate clubs and get even better even faster and develop even more confidence.

ย

OP would lose 10-15 yards with GI irons, his impact location has him missing greens by 30 yards with short irons

ย

Are we getting better if those irons fly the same from the toe as the centre?ย

Hey,

ย

So I've got an itch to get some newer/better irons, currently I have the 2017 P790's, but to be honest, I have an eye for a set of blades, or a combo set of MB/CB's. I'm only handicap 15-20 or so, but I do hit my irons pretty well considering - it's 3-4 putting and tee shots that hurt me the most.

ย

Is there a slight step up from my current P790's that has a sleeker/smaller look but with only slightly less forgiveness? Or do I need to just suck it up and go with a set of blades and be done with it? I've hit blades on the range, but just never brought them out to the course due to it throwing my distances off.

ย

The takomo 101T's and 301's piqued my interest because I could pretty much upgrade with 0 extra cost after selling my old stuff.

ย

Ping i210's look interesting - it has the hollow body with insert, smaller and definitely have a nice sleek look.

ย

I'm newer to the game, so i'm not 100% familiar with a lot of the other brand offerings out there that would fit the bill.ย

ย

Thanks in advance for your insight and advice!

First, ignore the comments about a 15-20 capper not being a good striker. Totally possible to be a good striker and maybe have face to path issues (as well as poor short game). Anyways, Im currently testing the 301s here:

To be honest even for a decent ballstriking 15-20 cap, it may be a bit of a stretch. The 101t or the 201s would be a much better fit IMO.

ย

Don't get me started. Those hot spots on my Titleist GI's (T100) drive me crazy, literally no way for my 36 index a** to improve if every second shot flies the green by 20 yards from a clean fairway lie. Should not have sold those baby blades, but oh well, after playing them for two weeks straight I needed something new and shiny to look at.

Yes? And we are definitely scoring better! We can still build strike awareness when it matters with forgiving clubs.. players with no face/impact control donโ€™t need nuanced feedback and they donโ€™t need precise spin controlโ€ฆ they need something that gets them nearer the green when they miss the center of the club by an inch

This is simple.ย  ย If you cannot get off of the teebox, disregard every message that says anything about getting new irons.

ย

Learn, take lessons, get better fitting clubs to keep it in play and in the corridor as much as possible off of the teebox.ย  ย Play shorter tees, hit 4 or 3 iron off of the tee box until you get good with that.

ย

Move back a tee box and take a couple of other clubs on and learn how to hit them.

ย

P790's I have seen scratch players use, the irons are not holding you back.ย  Tee shots are some of the most important shots as how well you do dictates how you play the hole.

ย

Better in that it'll likely lead to lower scores and enjoying the game more.

ย

The same way a 460 driver lets you get away with missing the exact sweet spot but still gives you a playable drive and a decent approach shot. Nobody advises high handicap golfers to hit a 300-cc driver so they can 'get better.'

Titleist T200 might be your sweet spot looks like a blade, but with some forgiveness and and distance help.

Feel like trash... the soles have way to much bounce. I'm a titleist fan but they are not great irons past the 100 line.ย

ย

Taylormade DHY feels 100% better than the t200. I'd play those big things before the 200' had the 4 5 6. 5 rounds gone. I do play t100s and the dhy 4. Also have MG/vokey tsr driver stealth plus 3 tsi2 5.ย

ย

In addition hate to say it but the mg3 feels better than new vokeys. Old vokey with the old alloys different story.ย
