Actually, I played a charity best ball in November. They had a unique solution. The foursome that finished 8th would be awarded the  top prize. Totally randomized things. Completely messed with the scammers and sandbaggers. They couldn't game the system.

Reminded everyone from the beginning that the purpose of playing wasn't to win stuff, but to support the charity.

Then don’t play in scrambles where the group with the sharpest pencil usually wins (not based on their golf skills).   The events are most often meant for fun and contributions to a charity. Low golf scores should not be a significant achievement nor recognized as such.

My friend, you've missed the point/context of the post of mine you quoted.

As you can see, BF talked about "defeating" sandbaggers by awarding the top prize to the 8th place team.

From there the conversation went from my "why not just pick names out of a hat and not bother paying the greens fees" to which Double Mocha and I got into that back-and-forth - that ended with my "not taking the club back", etc..

My post you quoted had nothing to do with my not playing scrambles, or any objections about them. :classic_wink:

Then my apologies, no bad intentions. Happy New Year!

I’ve played in four-man open cash scrambles every year for the last 15 years. Our combined handicap in our group is usually around +8. X tour pros and current tour Pros are allowed. Always play in groups of eight and most years when we play the big tournament for $20,0001st place, there is a spotter required to drive around with each group to keep score  Lots of cash on the line. Usually 7100 ish yards. We’ve never shot worse than -17 in 15 years and we’ve only ever won once when we shot 24 under.
I think with eight mulligans and four throws, at 6000 yards, 2 plus 3’s could get pretty close to 20 under as a twosome.
6000 yards, basically means five driveable par fours, and 4 par fives that are mid and short iron on second shot.
I would expect to make at least two albatrosses using the throws…

But 4+ handicap golfers is a far cry from a scratch, 2 7’s and a nine.

Seems  like a stretch, but I’m willing to say that it’s possible with the mulligans and the throws.  6000 is silly short!

Have a par 3 at my course I can throw it on the front edge from the white tees in the air. Carry is about 112. Adding in 10-15 of roll gets to 125.

Not trying to derail the thread, was just pointing out if you get an actual baseball guy on the team the throw could be even further and be a huge advantage.

You are absolutely right. I have 2 friends that played baseball in college. Both pitchers that can thrown upper 80's mph fastball. They can both easily throw a golf ball over 100 yards carry on flat ground.

I mean I guess its possible with add on purchases. My groups best score was 56 on a 6600 yard course. Granted that's no where near 46. But it was only achievable cause each member bought packages to help. If I remember right. the winning score was 49 or 50.

The group with most "packages"  wins...

I have quit playing scrambles for the most part. I have a few friends that put on fundraisers and I will play in theirs just to help out. I put on a scramble for our golf team fundraiser as well. I have learned a lot from scrambles...

** Twice I have been on a team that shot -22...one time with 2 mulligans each and a red tee each, one other time with just 2 mulligans, one of the times kinda got called out and was ready to ask the guy if he wanted to go to number one and lets play for something until I realized he was one of the best mid ams in the country (our score was legit but it made me think twice)

** Played in a scramble that was $2500 per 4 man team (it was a sponsored team), it was a fundraiser for a congressman in Washington...we won the tournament and won $75 pro shop credit each...that day I learned how Washington works

** Too many times our team handicaps have been a plus, a scratch, a 3 or 4 and a 10 or so, played good and shot -14 or so and get drilled by a team with a 10, 12, 15, and 20 handicapper

The scramble I put on is a 3 man, we play in 6somes though I do try to pair friends up and I have never had a question about the integrity of the scoring. The hardest thing for me is to find a way to get the handicaps/net scores correct so that everyone has a chance. Yes there are going to be a couple good scores of good players and there are going to be good scores of groups with high handicaps bc its a net event, but have played in a scram where I have started the round 12 shots down. Tough to catch that.
