pga tour superstore damaged my clubs. how do i proceed?

Hi all. Not sure if this is the right section to post this in but wanted to get your guys input. I dropped off 2 irons at pga store to get reshafted. i picked up today and realized that the cavity back looks like it was heated (appears to have burn mark on one of the irons, store employee also made this same comment) and caused one irons to flake and the other iron to bubble up. i can't prove that they were 100% the ones to do this since i did not take pictures before dropping off but have pictures from 12/16 that show do not show those defects. i also cleaned the irons before dropping them off for reshaft so i know this was not pre-existing i took the irons back and they said someone will reach out to srixon to see what they could do but theres a chance that nothing will come about from this since i did not purchase directly from pga or srixon. how would you guys proceed? would yall make this into a big deal or just move on?

*UPDATE*

Was provided with new 5&6i.

Just move on. Need to apply heat to break the epoxy. That’s the risk taken when reshafting clubs.

What model iron or pics please. The cavity SHOULDN'T need to be heated, but it depends on the hosel design.

Srixon zx5. I didn’t take pics but I found an older post of a zx5 that had the same exact damage down to the same spot.

Good chance they used a heat gun instead of a torch. Kind of bush league. There are ways to protect the insert even if you have to use a heat gun.

Talk to the manager and ask them to make it right. I agree with above a gift card of some amount is probably appropriate.

Would I take them to small claims court? No, obviously

But they f***d up your clubs and if they thought this was a possibility they should have informed you of the risks before taking the job.

Agreed. Although, I'd be interested to know if OP signed something ahead of the work being done. Had GG re-shaft a 7i last year. Pretty sure there was a "contract" of sorts. Didn't read through the whole thing, but wouldn't be surprised if there was something in there about risk of damage.

Regardless, still think they should make it right.

That's really weird

Even more weird you found a pic online that isn't yours with identical damage

are ya certain it was damaged during the repair?  Even though you cleaned them before, I could see that being easy to overlook if ya really weren't looking.

very weird stuff, hope it works out for you

thanks for the input guys. im supposed to receive a call from one of their specialists on wednesday and go from there to see what they can do for me. i can provide an update for y'all. @BYK i am 99.9% sure it was after i dropped it off for reshafting. im very particular with my clubs and it's rather quite noticeable. i have pics from 12/16 that show the backs to be normal and have only gone to the range twice since hitting about 10 balls with each club so thats why im so sure it was damaged during the job. especially considering the fact that i gave them two clubs and both clubs came back with damage in the same area

I agree with this 100%. I know a lot of people like heat guns for reshafting, but it's REALLY hard to control the blow-over when using one unless there is a funnel attachment being used (which most don't). A tech can be MUCH more precise with a micro-torch and avoid this type of damage. That medallion is simply painted plastic and will not take much heat at all. They should compensate you in some way for damaging the club.

I know. I’ve built irons before. Metal conducts heat. Air conducts heat. Not surprised at all that something like that happened.

With just a smidge of experience and the proper tool (micro torch), you can remove a steel shaft from an iron without much heat getting into the body of the iron. They probably had a hack with a big blow torch over-doing the heat application

Why are you acting like this is something that is to be expected? you have doubled down on this but its just not true.

When you get your tires changed you shouldn't expect your rims to get scratched. When you heat a hosel you shouldn't expect the cavity of your clubs to be mangled

Pretty straightforward situation here

thanks for the science lesson.

anyone that peels off badge material when removing an iron head has zero experience and not a clue what they're doing.  you make it sound like it's no big deal.

Some types of epoxy can be stubborn to release e.g. Ping.

If damage was unavoidable then you should have been advised appropriately. If not given, it’s clear you should be compensated.

Im not surprised in the least that this happened. Is it possible to do it with out this happening? Absolutely. However, this isn’t some bespoke shop building hand ground irons the match weigh to fractions of a gram. It’s a big box store paying a guy $15 an hour. This seems to fall into the same category as marks on the hosel from bending. Even mizuno says that that could be the result if you order specs that require bending. The paint blemish doesn’t impact playability. Just seems like a non event.

Your irons have “badges” in the cavity that are used to set swing weight. They have plastic. They can easily be replaced.

I had a similar experience at my local pgass.
I went in to have my bettinardi queen b 6 shortened and lie angle changed.

got a call the next day that the shaft broke off right at the hosel and is stuck in the head.
They told me they would work to find a solution to replace. They were unable to locate at any of their locations the same year as my qb6 (new model just came out). They then allowed me to custom order any model from the new line to my specs direct through them from bettinardi. Three weeks later I walked out with a brand new bettinardi at their expense.
in this instance they went above and beyond for me which I greatly appreciated.

Why do we not have photos of the actual clubs

hey there! sorry i shouldve done so when i got the irons back since i know others want to see it as well. i dropped the irons back off immediately back to pgass and told them to hold on to it until its resolved. the more i thought about it, the more i got frustrated i got. i didnt think to take pictures when i got the irons back until i got home and posted on here. i can upload pictures when i receive them back if you want to see what it looks like with the flaking and bubbling. will have an answer on Monday hopefully on what will be happening. stay tuned!

Sounds good. I didn’t realize you didn’t have the clubs.

Hope they make it right for you. Wouldn’t be hard to just give you a $100 gift card if anything.
