What’s the Issue with Atlanta Clubs

I’m just confused if it’s an old money town why Ross, Tilinghaust, Flynn, Mackenzie or any of their peers never stepped foot in town. I respect your answer besides Rees Jones, that’s below the belt to make fun of him like that.

One thing about Atlanta that is important to know, there may be more courses that no longer exist in Atlanta than there are courses open today. Atlanta for a long time was a compact city that then exploded to the surburbs, and then for a while it was medium size city that once again exploded further out to new suburbs. When places like Capital City was built in the 1920 it was way outside of town, nearly 30 years later when Peachtree was build a few miles away that was on the edge of the metro area. Then at the turn of the millennium, when Capital City build their next country property They went twice as far out of town to find the country setting they were looking for. Today that area is suburban. While Capital City's migration allowed them to keep their previous course, other clubs made different decisions. Atlanta Athletic Club left East lake to move 20 mile out of town to built their current facility, The no. 2 course at East Lake was abandoned some time prior, the move to north almost caused the abandonment of the no. 1 course as well.  The Standard Club sold their buckhead property to move 20 miles out of town in the 80's, the course was not preserved in that move. This was not an uncommon decisions As the city grew and people looked towards the suburbs as the new place to be, they often left behind the courses they had in town. Guys like RTJ, Dick Wilson, Pete Dye, Byrd, Joe Lee, and Cobb shaped Atlanta golf.

Look at the courses you listed, All but the Ainsley 9 hole routing are courses build in the past 50 years. For classic age golf in Atlanta your options are very limited.

Also, and just as important, Guys like Tilly, Flynn, and Mackenzie did very little work in the south. Outside of Florida and Augusta National, I not sure of any work those 3 have done in the south that is of any note.

Need to ask your Peachtree friend introduce you to their golf network via golf or other social settings when you are in town.

How did you join your home club - legacy member? Otherwise you probably had to go through the same process, right?

I believe East Lake and Atlanta Athletic has large national membership bases... for what its worth.

For example, LaGrange, Columbus have always been the armpits of Georgia, but it didn't stop Ross and MacKenzie from cashing that check.

Damn man, I lived in Columbus for years. Lovely town with some good golf. Larry Mize is a local resident.

If you want to talk "armpit of Georgia" I think you need to look more towards Macon (how many massage parlors does one town need?) and Valdosta (booming Oxycontin industry).

There is a 0% chance you are getting a callback from these courses based on a cold call.  It is actually laughable.  You are a member at a high-end east coast club, have contacts at Peachtree, and don't know that you need membership support for a $100k club with a 100-person waitlist?

Also, you have a crappy attitude and sound like a tool.

I asked a question hoping to get respectful comments not to be accosted by someone who thinks Ohoopee is anything other than a run down cow pasture. Good day to you.

I am a member of a higher end golf club on the east coast and am looking into a membership in Atlanta since I frequently travel there, but the clubs I have contacted aren’t responding. I have contacted Capital City, Cherokee, Ansley, and a few others inquiring about membership options and waitlists. I understand golf is popular and some of you may say the clubs don’t need more members, but with their high operating costs they could sure use a $200,000 check. Does anyone have any advice on how to get through to these clubs? I don’t want to be a jerk but I’m considering having my club pro make some calls or have my Peachtree member friend make some inquiries. Thanks

They don’t give a damn about you and your new money.

I know a guy in a very similar situation to you. He got a national membership at Hawk's Ridge in Ball Ground. It's quite out of the way but excellent.

I bet there are national memberships available at Reynolds Plantation as well.

You're not going to get into any club closer to the perimeter than those two.

I know where are laughing at OP for being a cold-calling carpetbagger, but I’m curious as to why no one has mentioned Golf Club of Georgia. No one seems to know about it but it’s got 36 holes of solid golf.

Also, why the hell do people keep thinking Cherokee is 200k?

Because it says it on the Internet. It isn’t $200k, but it is over $100k.
