I don't know about current course conditions, but layout wise the River Course at Kingsmill is awesome.  I've played there a few times and never not enjoyed it.  Golden Horseshoe Gold is also a wonderful golf course.  In Williamsburg you won't go wrong with either.

If playing Kingsmill check on lodging.  It used to be to play there you had to stay on property.  I haven't played there in about ten years so policy may have changed.  On recent visits I've been playing both Golden Horseshoe courses and haven't really missed Kingsmill.  With GH if you stay at a Colonial Williamsburg hotel you get special deals on greens fees and pro shop items.  When we went a few years ago if you stayed at one of their hotels and played either the Gold or Green course you could play the executive nine course (Spotswood) for free.  Good for the wives that play.

Yeah as of right now we’re booked to stay there for a night just to play their river course

The Kingsmill resort itself is nice enough, but I can say from recent experience that their website and media way oversell the quality.  I'm not sure when those AAA Four Diamonds were awarded, but I was there in August and it was definitely not that.

Yeah we don’t really care too much about the resort itself. Staying 1 night just to play their river course and jumping to an air bnb

Might be worth it to buy a VSGA VIP Golf Pass then.  $99 for the book.  You could get a play at Kingsmill without staying on the property with the book.  And then you have the book for discounts at many other Virginia courses.  Lots of restrictions on when you can play, though (most are Mon-Thurs).

While the River course isn't awful by any means, in my opinion I think it's a bit overrated, probably largely to do with having hosted PGA and LPGA events for so long and being associated with the resort. I'm not even sure what the green fees there are now or what time your trip is but don't expect lush green conditions like you use to see on tv for the LPGA. Yes, it definitely has some good holes on it, especially the last 3 but otherwise it's maybe #4 on my favorite places to play in/around Wburg.

I love the gold course at Golden Horseshoe, always been one of my favorites, a lot of good holes, elevation changes and 4 of the best par 3's you will see on one course. Wburg Club is my other favorite course up there but its private so harder to get on. New Kent is also another one of my favorites.

Driver: Callaway Paradym Triple Diamond 10.5 w/Ventus Blue TR 6X

3 Wood: Titleist TSR2+ 14.5* w/Ventus Blue TR 7x

5 Wood: Titleist TSi2 18* w/Aldila Rogue White 130 80 TX

Irons: Titleist T-200 3 iron w/Ventus Black 9TX

          Titleist T-150 4-PW w/Project X 6.5

Wedges: SM9 Raw 52F & SM9 58T grind w/Project X 6.0

Putter: Scotty Cameron Phantom X5

Would love to hear how Stonehouse is now, it's been over 20yrs since I played it and wondering how it is now since they basically brought it back from death.

I played those 4 last September.  The Gold course and RNK is great golf.  Both have fantastic layouts.  Would return to those anytime.  Stonehouse needs work.  Some of the tee boxes were totally destroyed... like they were literally mud mounds.  Greens were fuzzy and chewed up in areas.  Fairway was spotty.  Layout wise it was nice to see another Stranz but they have a ways to go.
