Problem group wants help on golf scramble

Since COVID has largely broken, groups that had past golf outings are trying to re-load their events.

 

One such industry group has a reputation for being a bit rowdy. Pre-COVID two of the last five courses they played said "don't come back." Most of the problem has to do with drinking before and during the round: This leads to slow play, people not fixing ball marks, and occasional cart mishaps.

 

Big picture: I'm retired now, and people are asking me to help find courses for golf outings and charity scrambles. I'm willing to help, but I don't want golf course managers to associate me with social bad boys.

 

What should I do? Talk to the group leader and get some behavior rules put into place? (They're a responsible group on the job).

 

Or, should I just walk away from this one? (I know some of the industry guys professionally).

Walk away. One group isn’t worth getting a bad reputation.

You're retired?  How old are the other guys?  I can see this stuff from younger guys, but sounds like they need to grow up.  You need to walk away.  You don't want to be associated.  Good luck

You can offer guidance on how to go about contacting a course, and what to do or not do while conducting the event. However, I wouldn't do anything on someone else's behalf.

 

There is absolutely no upside to you tying your name to someone in this situation. If things go well then that's how it was supposed to be. If things go sideways you are one of the people who will have to answer for it.

I'm asked to help out because I am retired, and supposedly have time to volunteer. People in group are mix of Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z, as are the troublemakers.

This should be a very simple conversation: 

 

"Guys...you've been kicked off multiple golf courses. I am not taking any part in this. Get your s*** together."

I see you are in St Louis Area - Book them on something like Royal Meadows, Eagles Bluff or Sugar Creek

No don't get involved, both for the preservation of your golf contacts and even more for you personal protection. I don't know the laws in your area, but it is not unusual for organisers of events to have some liability for what happens at an event (and after if it if people leave drunk). With this crew it sounds like just a matter of time before there is some trouble.

If I'm reading this correctly they've burned the bridges on 40% of the courses they've played and want you to book their next outing because you "have the time".

30 some years ago there was an annual outing that some high school friends partnered together on.  They, too, often wore out their welcome at some local courses.  Might have been because one group played the 18th hole naked every year but I can't confirm.

Admonish them and let them know that anymore shenanigans and you're out. Let them know exact behaviors you won't put up with. Let the courses know that they are free to kick them off the course and to let you know if any bad behavior is going on. 

 

That's if you enjoy being involved for those who are sincere about playing. You can always lay down rules that dictate when you get to kick someone out of the group. If the group doesn't like it then they can schedule their own stuff.

I believe Royal and Eagles are in a separate federal court district from St. Louis. I see your point.
