Callaway also has a tour issue utility iron as well with less offset, a thinner sole and interchangeable weight screw similar in design to their MB.

Eh, we can give them a pass on those and just call them cool R&D projects if they truly are 1-offs like the Frittelli AW and etc.

Hang on. Have I been living under a rock? When did tour faces become thicker? Is that just for Callaway or every company? minds a bit blown if true.

Its true. Johnny has said it in regards to Callaway tour products many times; saying that your players dont want cracked clubs due to how many balls they hit and want the same club all season long so Callaway puts thicker faces on the TC serials.

They don’t want drivers out on tour failing the CT testing.

If thats the case, then retail sounds like there is more potential for speed i.e rebound effect.   Thinner face with more flex/spring = more speed and also, a slight higher chance for cracking?  These are all small margins I know, but it is interesting to think about.

I think it's unfair to skewer him.  Johnny works for Callaway.  It's his job to hype their product.  Also, I don't think he said anything misleading.

There are a lot of people who will never believe tour players play the same stuff no matter what you say.  And there is always this idea that tour issue stuff is "better for better players", "anti-hook", or "lower ballflight".   Since everyone here seems to have 180 ball speed and struggle with high hooks, this is of course going to be appealing to those players.

In the case of Callaway, sure, there are models that are tour only.  But the fact is that most guys use the 3D which is retail.  This particular model seems to be a niche tour model, seems to be more forgiving than 3D model they released to the general public, which most pros are using anyways.  Last year, they had a 3D model which was actually higher spin and launch than the LS, which was tour only. So you can't please people by withholding the low spin tour head and you can't please people by withholding the slightly more forgiving head that a couple tour guys are using.

Let's see how many pros actually game this head.  The 3 models they released will probably fit 99% of golfers here and its silly and confusing to release more than that for equipment message board people. Why are people so pissed about it?  If you want one of these heads and you actually think it will help your game then then you can probably pay through the nose for one.  Or play your way on tour.

No its absolutely warranted.

Hyping does not require lying, and make no mistake he was knowingly lying... again.

These other heads had already been manufactured and tested by tour players so he knew damn well that it wouldn't just be three heads that EVERYONE was using.

He really doesn't have any credibility left which is not a good thing for someone in his position.

The LYING is the big problem.

He has definitely lost some credibility with the true gear heads who eat and breathe this stuff.

Eh, I'm not really upset with him as much as you guys are. I guess I have a soft spot for Callaway but it's a given that there will be tour only models 🤷🏻‍♂️

JW was always willing to answer really minute and esoteric questions we had and I'm sure his time was better spent elsewhere on social rather than here so he didnt absolutely have to; but he did.

If he really isnt coming back to WRX to answer questions that would be a shame but I get it.

This is 100% true.  Played golf last summer with the lead engineer for the Rogue ST Triple D and acoustics engineer.  I was trying to not be annoying and ask too many WRX'y questions, but I did ask about the tour heads.  Not just thicker faces, but sometimes different Ti-alloys tweaked for strength and consistency.  Retail heads will test out of compliance within a few months due to how many balls a pro hits in the middle of the face at high speeds. Also, he stated that you will have slower ball speeds out of the middle with a tour head if you're not at least 115+ SS.

He said a lot of other intriguing things as well.  It was actually one of the more excruciating rounds I've played because I had to constantly fight the urge to verbal diarrhea him with douchey WRX'y questions for 4.5 hours!  PAIN!

Does that apply to all manufacturers when it comes to the swing speed 115+  or is that just specific to Callaway?

wonder if a thicker stealth face would help our hurt the debonding issues some have had.

Johnny Wunder was on todays Q&A with the TXG boys.  Fast forward to about 30-40 min in and someone asks what the difference was. He had a tour head and talked about it.

I really hope they ask the question that needs asked. "I thought you said everyone was playing one of the three heads?"

At this point can we believe him?

He could be saying that just to get people to stop asking for heads from the tour.
