Fairway Wood Butt Trim Question

Recently I added a Taylormade 5 wood with their Ventus OEM shaft.  I really liked it and want to put the same shaft in my 7 wood.  If I buy the same exact shaft (from a Taylormade 3 wood), but 1.5 inches longer, can I butt trim it down to the 40.5 inches required for my 7 wood?  Any performance concerns?

You can. Another option would to tip trim it at least .5" more to account for the heavier head weight of the 7w, then finalize your playing length with a butt trim. 

 

OEMs vary in terms how much tipping they do in their builds, aftermarket shaft MFGs have tables as suggested starting points.

Thanks.  I'll try to find out what TM's specs are for the 7 wood and tip trim if needed.

Yes, assuming there is enough of the parallel tip section left and the max tipping is not exceeded.

 

Usually not the case for 7wd trim but you never know for sure when it comes to shafts coming out of the TM factory.

If the shaft comes fitted with the TM sleeve/ tip, I would merely install that as it is and grip down on some trial shots before I would tip trim.

Thank for the help, everyone.  I was able to purchase a 41-inch 6S Taylormade Ventus (for a stupidly low price from Mike's).  According to this chart from Fujikura, I should trim 1/2 inch from the tip for my 7 wood, as Taylormade has already trimmed 1/2 inch for the original 5 wood build.  And that would bring the length to 40.5, which is the exact length of my current 7 wood shaft.  I'll check the swing weight before I glue it up.

With the exception of a strange cure on the Golf Works epoxy (which I've used dozens of times without any issue), the build turned out great.  The weight without any adjustment came in at D3, which is close to my preferred swing weight. 

 

I tipped trimmed 1/2 inch, and with the factory tip trim of 1/2 for the original 5 wood shaft, this realized the perfect flex/load for my swing.  I got to put it in play on Tuesday and Wednesday this week and it's a great match for my TS2 head.  A smooth and easy swing puts me right in the 200 range with a nice height.  The height was what attracted me to this shaft in the first place.  The Evenflow Blue was a great fairway shaft, but this OEM TM Ventus is a better fit for my swing.
