What irons am I looking for?

Like a lot of people on here, I like to change my irons. Too.much.

 

 

 

I swapped my callaway tcb for the latest model cobra forged tec. I like them, don't love them. Don't spin enough and don't go high enough. They're done. Prior to these two sets, I had a combo set of the most recent apex, 7 to p in the pro and the standard apex in 4 to 6. Didn't love the apex, the pros were really good. Here is the issue...

 

Tried a demo set.of the.new t100 today. Loved 7 to pw, 6 I didn't hit and the 5 was just too thin a top line and too short a blade length. Is there a set that exists with thicker top line in the longer irons and then thinner in the short irons. Or do I get something like the t100 in 6 to pw and get something like a 4 and a 5 iron in the callaway UT? I have the 24 degree in this already. You can always blend t100 and t200, but there seems be a lot of hate on the plastic back plate on the t200. 

 

What about a ZX7/ZX5 set? The footprint is a tad larger on the ZX7 vs T100 but still a players iron. Alternative you can take a look at the new JPX Forged (whenever that is being released). Smaller footprint than the predecessor but that my be too low launching as it fairly strong lofted.

Srixon are great for blending. Start with the ZX7 and see how they perform

JPX 923 Forged gives you what you want in one set, with internally milled chromoly heads 4-7 and traditional forged 1020 steel in 8-G. A bit friendlier than T100 in the long irons. Smaller than ZX7. Blade length in the 923F short irons is much improved. 
 

Mizuno Pro 223 has same combo of chromoly and carbon steel heads. I don’t know which is more forgiving. 
 

Srixons are made to combo so you could look at ZX7, ZX5 and ZX4. They all look great. 
 

Same for the new Cobra lineup. CBs can be paired with the King Tour. 
 

Lots of options for forgiving long irons. I don’t worry about strong loft specs. All that matters is how high is the shot flying, what is the spin and descent angle? Lofts can be changed to dial in spin, but a lot of these power clubs with strong lofts still fly high.

The new cobras released could be the ticket. Tours in the long irons, cbs in the short irons. Other two mentioned have above have pretty thick toplines in the short irons, so not sure you would like that. A little wildcard to consider would be Takomo 101T.

Order whatever set you want in pw-6iron. Then get a 9wood, 7 wood, 4 wood.

Callaway tcb and Cobra Forged Tec are very different irons. I'd think a bit about whether you are looking for a players iron or a players distance iron before proceeding. If you want to head more toward the direction of the Cobras, then the TM P770 would be your slightly higher spin players distance iron. Otherwise, the T200/T100 or ZX5/ZX7 combo set is probably a good middle of the road. At this point, it's worth investing in a decent fitting as well.
