NYC Area Golf Clubs

Potentially moving back to New York City and looking to see what the options were for clubs in the lower price bracket.  Been a bit spoiled in Portland, OR with a great club 15 minutes from the house and a GC Quad in the living room.  
 

I reached out to a few places but the typical response has been that they’re not giving tours and not a whole lot more information provided than that.  
 

My priorities would be proximity to the UES, good practice facilities and nice conditions / fast & true greens.  Younger membership and better golfers definitely a bonus.  
 

Any help or recommendations would be much appreciated - especially what to expect in terms of dues and initiation.  Leaning towards north of the city vs Long Island….

Check out Rockland Country Club. It's over the GW Bridge into Jersey and then north on the Palisades about 10-15 minutes. Manhattan Woods is about 10 minutes further up but a bit more $. There's a couple right there in Jersey too, Alpine and Montammy but I've never played them.

Thanks @looper34.  Does anyone know how spendy a place like Wykagyl is in terms of initiation etc?

 

Since my girlfriend’s family is in Larchmont, I think ideally I’d find a spot over on that side of things.

Good luck finding a place to join. There really aren't any "lower price bracket" clubs in Westchester. Most have a hefty initiation and are a  big annual nut once you add up annual dues, food minimums, caddies etc. Perhaps call the MGA office in Elmsford. They may be able to give you some suggestions.

What would you guess initiation and annual spend ranges between?  I’m sure it’s not going to be cheap but just curious as to what it might look like.

Westchester is big money and not in the lower price bracket. Prices vary between clubs but they run between expensive and ludicrous.

I haven't lived in that area for awhile and am hesitant to guess, but if I was going to guess I'd think $25k/yr would be on the lower end of the scale for your all in cost. I think there are others on this site who can provide better info. Good luck in your search.

Check out Pelham CC.  I've never played it and honestly don't know much about the practice facilities and vibe but a buddy of mine was a Junior Golf member (25-35) for a few years and enjoyed the hell out of it but aged out (and moved north from Tarrytown).  Really regret never being able to take him up on an invite there.  https://pelhamcc.com/About_the_Club/Dues_Initiation_Fee_Schedule_(1)

 

If you're willing to drive just over an hour north (northern Westchester, southern Putnam county), your choices of affordable clubs opens up quite a bit ...Hollow Brook, Salem, Mahopac.  Not top tier clubs by any stretch but initiations and dues are much less with some better practice facilities due to having more real estate with which to work.

In westchester your expectation should be that most clubs will be 5 to 6 figures up front. 
 

Many have waitlists one year or longer and you need to have multiple letters of reference and a member sponsor. 
 

the only way you will get these questions answered is if you know a member. The MGA won’t help you, nor will reaching out to the club.

Pelham Is a fun course. The 2nd hole is a daunting par 3…. If you bogey it…. That is really good. 
 

like most westchester courses, they fit it into some limited real estate. It’s in good condition. Tee boxes for every skill level. 
 

they gave not taken down as many trees as most other courses in the area. Like all courses, distance helps, but a lot of holes are very tight, so stay in the fairway or you will be punching out of some rough conditions all day long.
