What made you trade your hybrid for a 5 or 7 wood?

Finishing out the top end of my bag for the season.. Looks like more and more people are using a high lofted wood as opposed to a hybrid..

I currently carry a 3 wood (15 degrees) and a 3 hybrid (19 degrees) and a 4 iron (srixon ZX utility iron at 23 degrees)

Looking to hear from anybody that may have switched out the middle club -- for a 5 or 7 wood -- and why.. Think the wood would travel higher than the hybrid, but the hybrid may be better from a variety of lies (play alot in the south with bermuda grasses)..

What say you?

Do you have hilly lies?  I find a 3 hybrid much easier to hit off a hilly lie than a 5 wood.

7 Wood has become my favorite club in the bag. Dead straight off a tee, easy to hit off the deck or rough, long punch shots when I'm under a tree, and even bump and run around the green on occasion. I love it. The hybrids I've gamed always seemed to have the capability of being a hook monster. When I set up to the ball with the hybrids I would say, "Please don't hook". Don't have to worry about that anymore.

all of these responses are awesome -- thinking about picking up a 7 wood as I routinely have some long par 4s or short par 5s that require a 200-215y shot that needs to stop quick..

But serious question -- I have also noted that the hybrid i currently carry will hook if I get squirrely with the swing -- why would that be?

For me anyway, my hybrids had a more upright lie angle and the faces always looked closed. I fought the hook regularly. I also noticed with my first 7W I would have a tendency to hit it straight or a high draw. Still wanted to go left. It was a Sim2 Max. I checked the lie against other fairways and it was more upright. I switched to a G425 Max and adjusted it down a degree and flattened the lie. Now it's poker straight or just a tiny fade, which is what I like. Distance is ridiculously consistent and it lands so soft. Highly recommend checking out Ping if you're going to do a fitting.

Could I have some opinions on the Ping 430 7 wood vs the Titleist TSr2 7 wood. I was eyeballing them today and they seemed quite similar in size, curious if one seems to be a bit hotter than the other.

Of course there was nothing but R or senior flexs in the otr clubs available and I would put a 80s into it if purchased.

I want something adjustable so that eliminates a few other options.

Was using 17* and 20* hybrids for a couple of years without any fairway woods. I did so because I couldn’t keep them on the planet, just couldn’t hit them for the life of me. Tried hybrids and distance was similar to the 4w and 7W I had been using. This worked great for about 2 1/2 seasons. This past summer the hybrids developed very serious cases of the lefts, actually beyond left of left. They had to go and I dug out some old woods from the banishment closet. They are working great (knocks on wood).

I've finally picked up a 5w -  stealth+ tensei orange ck pro tx from the classifieds, and will not be bagging a hybrid for the foreseeable future.

I was using an m1 rescue 3h, and would swap in the 2i 790 udi for certain courses/conditions.  Next club up was 4w/3w. The hybrid was fine for most shots, but I tended to overdraw it often.

Using the 5w for a few weeks and I'm a full convert now.  High, towering darts that I can work both ways when needed. Stock swing wants to go straight and even drip softly to the right, exactly what I want from that distance.  I have to consciously try to turn it over unlike the hybrid.  Ball flight is much higher.

I might try to rework my wedge lofts this year and carry 3w/5w/2i at the top.

Many hybrids are designed for higher handicaps who, the theory goes, slice.

So they are upright, have a closed face, offset  or all three.

I fight a hook with my irons, and the lower the loft the more I struggle.

But I fight less with my hybrids because there are some that set up open, can be opened more via adjustable hosels, and can be set flat.

The Ping G series hybrids (post 410) are beloved by many for precisely this reason, but others can be adjusted similarly.

I wouldn't buy a long hybrid that can't be adjusted. The only exceptions are the Mizuno FliHi hybrids which have shorter shafts to make them true iron replacements (and which setup open).

It's unfortunate that the most forgiving hybrids tend to be most hooky, but again there are exceptions.

Fairway woods tend to be naturally flatter in lie due to the longer shafter and less likely to set up closed.

I use these characteristics in my bag setup.

I have a Cleveland Halo XL '4 iron' I mainly use as a driving iron because it is much better off the tee than a hybrid, but also off the deck when I really need to curve the ball left around trees or doglegs and keep it low.

I also have a 4 hybrid of about the same loft which I hit with a slight draw and which is my usual layup club off the deck.

And I have a 5 wood which I usually hit straight when I need max distance but is also easy to fade if I need to, at he cost of reduced distance.

All three clubs technically overlap in distance, but their basic shot shaping differences makes them unique enough to earn their keep.
