Iron recomendations for a thin/low on the face miss

I am coming off a back/neck injury and my "new" swing has me missing thin/low on the face with little to no divot.

I know its mainly a swing flaw where i cant get to my left side hard enough, but I am coming to terms that this may be my new move.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on which irons new or old are on the more forgiving side for shots low on the face and have a relatively thin sole.

I'd assume most of the hollow body irons might be the ticket, but let me know what you all think

... Back issues can make my miss thin when it is stiff. P790's with the slot sole are more forgiving than any I have played when hit thin. I have a set of '22 Forged Tecs I play every now and then that feel pretty bad when hit really thin although they do produce a useable shot, just not in the same forgiveness category as the P790's.

You don’t need to go crazy with hollow body, any normal CB will be just fine. Finding a low CG iron with a thin sole is an issue though, those things are opposites.

223s have been really good for me, my miss is low as well. If you want to go back and find a gem for a couple hundred bucks the JPX800/825 pro would be a great choice.

Obviously Ping G series would offer the most support, but that sole would probably be too much for you

I'll second Taylormade with the sole slots. I had the previous generation P770s and they did well low off the face. Currently gaming T200s and the thin miss is good with these as well. I've had a few shots recently that I didn't deserve good results from and they ended up very well. I'm a huge fan of this category of club. They look great and really help you out on your days where the swing is off.

Try a set up change, move the ball back in your stance an inch or two.

May want to try an older set of muscle backs, with little to no offset.

See if you can redefine the low point in your swing to be infront of the ball at impact.

I’m loving my Callaway Apex DCB’s. Pretty good feel with some added forgiveness built in.

I had a problem with excessive thin shots (likely due to back pain, as chisag noted upthread), and I found these to be fantastic when I demo'd them on grass.

I'd also wonder if the Srixon v-sole would be helpful?

Hey so, this is my miss as well.  It payed dividends for me to place a tee a few inches in front of the ball and feel like I was hitting the tee.   That helped me compress it and catch ball first followed by a nice divot where the tee was.   Hope that helps.

**also helps to have a little forward press in your set up.

Getting irons that are designed to help you on thin strikes will help, but they will also be a bandaid.

I gamed a set of Mizuno MP H5s for a while, they were very forgiving on thin hits.

This is my vote as well, also really like the G25s currently but are definitely larger with more offset compared to the MPH5s.

Hi, speaking from the same experience…

your subconscious prevents you from hitting the ground due to your injuries.  Pretty Straightforward.  Hitting the ground can and likely will induce pain, especially if repeated.   No problem, at least for me, with a driver off a tee.  No ground contact.  Why I have a bag full of fairways and hybrids.  More sweeping than taking a divot.
Graphite in the irons will help. And a shaft that hits the ball higher for the irons.     Club head design helps as well, lower COG as in super game improvement irons, as they tend to slide through the turf rather than dig.  You’ll be unlikely to find a “thin sole” in that category.
if the course is damp and soft I’m happy, as is my neck, shoulders, elbows, and wrists etc…….

I hear you 100%.

I had my left shoulder totally replaced 2 years ago.

1)Force yourself to stay down---I had to do this as I worked on flexibility.

2) Move the ball back in your stance. I actually play wedges and short irons off my back foot--it allows me to get through the ball before my injury kicks in.  BENEFITS: it also teaches me to make my turn--as you have to turn to hit the ball off your back foot.

At 63 years, I still hit a long ball, 185-190 7 iron, and 155-160 9 iron with older lofts...turning makes all the difference for me.

Might be an odd suggestion but maybe try a longer length iron, maybe 1/2" on your irons could make a world of difference without having to buy new irons.

I had total reconstructive shoulder surgery a few years ago and traveled a pretty circuitous route to get to the irons I play now. I started with Cally Apex 16 with graphite shafts extended 1/4”. After a while I felt like I was leaving something on the table and after a couple of sets ended up with the DCB’s with the standard steel shaft @ 85 grams extended 1/2”. They are the best I ever played.

Over time your injury will improve and you’ll hopefully play better than before.

I never take lessons from people I don’t know, especially in these boards. LOL. Go to a pro that can watch you hit. I’m sure a few $ for a swing tune-up will be worth it in the long run.

What type of iron do you generally prefer? If you’re looking for a player type iron, TM 770, Miz 923 Forged, Wilson D9 Forged, PXG P models, Ping i210, or Call Apex Pro. All of these either have a slot on the sole or behind the face.

im a big ping guy, but in the past 5 or so years ive played the first gen 0311s and a 1/2 set of Geom Moes  both are built short and with S400s and they both feel too heavy/stout.  ... i picked up a set of 790s for cheap at a local shop with DG 105s

honestly i might try just about every set suggested, the people at Roger Dunn will see a lot of me .

My primary miss is thin….

I find you want irons that retain the distance but also don’t go too long either.

miura MC501/MC502…. Amazing for the thin miss. Retain spin really well.

I have had alot of success with new level PF2… but the 623CB may work even better as the have a bit lower CG.

Fourteen TC7 are superb. Just super forgiving players CB irons to start with.

finally, the new Ping I230. Really nice and consistent irons. The elastomer insert also keeps the sting a little more muted on the thin miss.

My irons miss is also thin, as a long time forged CB iron user the ones that helped with my miss were - Mizuno Tzoid pro's, MP62, MP64 and also the Bridgestone J33R. The T Zoids were superb but they are clearly not a distance iron so you will need to adjust your gaps accordingly....plus they can be bought for a song these days.

The Ping i210/230s have more bounce than comparable player cavity irons, which could allow you to get a little more divot without fear - worth a test.

Srixon ZX5/7s with its V sole could also have a similar outcome. I’ve come to really enjoy the v sole feel through the turf and allows me to take a solid divot without thinning or fear of fatting.

Check out the super low VCOG on the old Ping S58.  Not a ton of lateral forgiveness, but if you are thinning it out the middle, it’s one of the better ones out there with a thin sole.

heres' an update to my journey to find a set of irons that i can use while i get back on track.  i forgot i had purchased a set of single length King Forged Tec One Blacks w/ some steelfibers off of the BST last summer.   I took them for a range session and i think these mioght be a little more agreeable to my limitations.
