Need some assistance on shaft

Hey everyone , new member here. Recently started playing 1.5 years ago.  At this moment I have a used set of Callaway APEX CF16 with S300 true temper 95. Recently went to 2nd swing because i wanted to get some stats on my clubs. My 7 iron I was 160 yards at 89-91 mph with a average ball spin of 6400-6900.   The fitter said my ball spin was too high and needed stiffer shafts. He convinced me to go with hazardous rifle 6.5….. said that my ball spin was way to high and needs to be 5200-5800. Got the new shafts on and having significant trouble connecting. Contemplating going back to the stock shafts it maybe moving up to 105…I feel much better with the lighter shafts. The 6.5’s feel like im swinging a boat paddle. Question I have is that normal stats for the true temper 95’s? I’m new at this. Thanks in advance!

I scratch my head on this one.  First HZRDUS Rifle shafts are significantly heavier than what you had.  This jump in weight will impact anyone ones feel regardless of how long they have been playing.  Obviously you don't like the heavier shaft and that is fine.  He should have at least let you hit some of the heavier to see before you changed.  Being new, it would be interesting to see you AoA and launch as well (you don't need to post those).  Changing ball position or possible AoA would be another way to change your spine.  That said, the link below has the average numbers for the PGA and LPGA my club.  I realize you are a new player, but nice to have something to compare too.  I really question the 2nd Swing guy you dealt with.  I have had several good experiences with the one in Columbia, MD.  Of course, there are a lot of "golf experts/fitters"  who are not the best.  Same as anything else.

Wow.  Sorry to hear that.  I really scratch my head on the spin numbers.  Hopefully Stuart or Howard will weigh in on this one.  I don't know your age or ability, but surprised he was trying to push such a heavy shaft.  One thing to maybe try the DG 120, but that is a huge adjust on your timing and feel, especially for a fairly new golfer.  Good luck.

"Of course, there are a lot of "golf experts/fitters who are not the best. Same as anything else."

Never a truer statement made in regard to "fitters" LOL.  There's a whole world full bad and incompetent ones.  I've stood and listened to some of the BS they feed unsuspecting customers.

The only advice I can offer is "buyer beware". Do your homework and look for input, here perhaps and fellow players in your area that have had fittings successfully.  And it does seem a great majority of the bad ones reside in these big box retailers. And lastly if you have the opportunity to do your fitting (particularly for irons) outside that's the preferred option. Seeing ballflight and turf interaction is critical. Next best would be hitting from inside to out. I would never do or trust a fitting strictly done inside on a monitor. Good luck.

Can I assume you're talking about club speed and not ball?

This seems like poor advice.  91mph is decent club speed for a 7i, but 160 is fairly short at that speed.  I'd be less concerned about the spin, and more concerned about getting something into your hands that you can strike a ball well with.   This isn't it.

I have S300s in my Ping i210s, my 7i is 33*, yours is 31* (Assuming it's stock).  My stock 7i swing speed will usually be around 91-93, and I'm expecting about 180 carry with upper 5000s spin.  The difference is contact.  I doubt you're losing distance because of spin (which isn't abnormally high), you're losing it likely due to ballspeed or vertical launch.  Either you're not hitting ball first, or you're presenting too much loft at impact.
