Anyone else have this issue with Ventus Velocore shafts?

Recommended Posts

I have recently become a Srixon staff member (I am a PGA Professional), and I have had this issue happen with two different fairways, the new Srixon when I ordered it, as well as a Taylormade.  Last year I put a Ventus Velocore Blue 7S in my TM Stealth+ fairway and the swignweight went to D0.  (I had originally ordered a Smoke Black RDX 70 S in that head and it came out as D2.)  I didn't like the launch on that shaft, so I found a Velocore Blue 7S online, exaclty the same length, butt of grip to tip of adaptor, and the swingweight dropped 2 points!  BTW, the grips were the same, with the same tape underneath.  I was perplexed.

Long story short, when I became a Srixon staff member this year I ordered the new fairway with a Ventus Black Velocore 7 S (tipped 1/2 inch) and it came out at D0 again at just over 43" in total length!  (Now I'm confused.)  The swingweight is supposed to  be D2 to D3 stock!

Are the Ventus Velocore shafts somewhat counterweighted?  I have never seen this issue before!  Which is why I ask another question...  Are there any shafts out there that would bring the swignweight back up to the D2/D3 range?  My thought choices would be Tensei AV Raw White 75, and possibly the GD Tour AD XC-7 (since I know those shafts are a bit tip heavy.)  What other shafts in the same type of range for low/low would be thoughts?

Thanks!

I think something like this came up yesterday about OEM club building. Are you grips midsize? Cause that would move the SW from D3 to D0 as they would measure with a standard grip.

Is there a reason you're not just considering putting lead tape on the head?

For fairway woods I'll add it to the toe and heel areas of the sole where it won't contact the ground and it works just fine for me.  If you like the Ventus then I would think this would be a better option than changing to an entirely new shaft.

I would think that it has to be a balance point issue with the Fuji shafts?

I have Velocore Red 5-S for driver, 6-S and 7-S series for 3 wood, and new Velocore Blue TR 6-S in driver.  Driver shafts cut to 44.75" and wood shafts 42.5" and 43" and haven't encountered any swing weight problems.  Using GP CP2 Pro, + 3 wraps, SW is D2.

Can't speak to that shaft - but shaft balance points can be all over the place between different shaft models - so yes changing shafts can effect the swing weight.   That happens all the time.

Not a good approach.   Pick the shaft that is a good fit for you - both for static weight and stiffness feel and stick with it.   It's usually not a good idea to change shafts to fix a swing weight problem.

First question - is it really a problem?   Forget the swing weight value for a sec - how do they actually feel when you use the club?

If the club really does feel too light to you, there are much better ways to fix it then changing shafts.    As @grochol17 mentioned above, lead tape is the easiest.   Hotmelt is another option with woods.     Many head models have aftermarket weights available you can use to change the head weight (billy bob's golf is a good source for those).   And of course the adapter can be pulled and a tip weight can be added.
