Should I buy my driver and shaft separately?

I was recently fitted into a 430 sft with a speeder nx shaft. The build specs they sent me list the shaft for $450 but I can find it online for $350. Is there a reason to not buy the driver and shaft separately? I’d save $100 and get a stock shaft to sell or give to a buddy. The fitter did suggest 3/4 longer because I’m tall.

Yes, you could buy them separately, but you'll also need to purchase the correct tip to fit your brand driver and a new grip. Those alone will run you about $40-50. Then (if you aren't a seasoned club builder) you'll need to pay someone to trim the shaft to your correct length and install the adapter. That is assuming you can find an uncut shaft for sale, and if you can't then you'll need to pay someone to add an extension. All in all you might end up spending more to have all that done than you would have if you just paid the $100 to get it from the manufacturer.

 

At the end of the day it all comes down to how much you think that $100 is worth. Personally, I'd rather pay it and not have to go through the headache and uncertainty of everything else.

If you are impatient like me, ordering together may be better.  If you have patience and can shop around for the right deal and fit (adapter, weight, play length) then there is definitely money to be saved.  Good luck

Without seeing a spec sheet and pricing, it's tough to know if there are any real savings to be found.

 

Are they rolling the build cost into the price of the head/shaft? Or is there a separate additional charge for that?

 

If it's the former - then as @Abh159 contends, you probably won't save much, if anything.

 

If they are charging $100 extra for the shaft, and adding build costs - then you might find a cheaper option out there. But, cheaper often means more effort/hassle.

 

I've honestly been considering this conundrum with wedges recently. I balk at $150+ per club prices for wedges. I figure there must be a cheaper way to go. 

 

What if I bought some Maltby heads and built them myself? With all the components - the cost out of pocket was right around $100. But, then I've got to build them. That current $119 price on last cycles's Cleveland Zip Cores started looking a lot more reasonable.

What did you gain in distance/dispersion from the fitting? THAT'S what you're getting for your money!

 

Don't get me wrong, I try at least 3 or 4 drivers every year cause I'm just that way. I don't mind spending money on golf at all, but the question is always there. I usually think about saying something when someone is looking to save a little bit on such a big purchase. I get the feeling you are unsure the results are worth the cost?
