Graphite shaft lengthening

Question from a long time gawker, seldom poster. I bought a Mitsubishi Diamana ZF shaft from a big box store that was clearancing out some fitting shafts. I was wanting to use it in my Rogue ST Max Driver. Got it home any realized I made the rookie mistake of not measuring first. 1 inch too short. The internal debate I am having is 1. Add a 1" extension and let it rip or 2. Return the shaft because number 1 is a stupid idea. Can I get some thoughts? Thanks in advance.

seems to pretty straightforward and inexpensive if you are handy

One inch should be fine. Using the proper extension, prep and epoxy.  I wouldn’t go much longer than that.

My graphite iron shafts have 1" extensions. No issues.

I agree that an extension will be fine.  Just make sure it fits tight, and then epoxy it in place.  The problem comes in regarding getting a tight fit.  You can order different sizes adapters from Golfworks, but I prefer to order the stand oversize version, then use a sanding block and 100 grit sandpaper, to reduce the diameter until it's nice and snug.  No guessing on size this way.

I'm going to take a different approach - Give it a go with the reduced length first before making any decisions.   May need a bit extra weight on the head but  -1.0" compared with the stock playing lengths is usually a better fit for most amateurs than the longer stock lengths.

Try it first like Stuart said. If it doesn't work out, try to extending it.

 

Also, if you have a big box store or a shop near you, tell them you are looking to extend, ask to take the grip and tape off and dry fit some extensions in there. When someone comes to me wanting to extend a club or two themselves I don't have a problem with them paying for the universal extension but me giving them something from my stock that fits better.

The universal extensions aren't really any more expensive.  It's looks like it but if you read the fine print you're paying for a pack of 3.  So that's not he price for a single extension.

I don't do a lot of work so don't keep a lot of different sized extensions on hand.  So for me, keeping a few of the universals around makes the most sense since I don't know what shaft they might end up in.   But if I did know, I'd likely get the premium ones since it takes a bit of work (sanding/filing) to get the universals to fit into most graphite shafts.

@Stuart_G, the ones in the picture I posted are the ones that I have in various sizes. I don't mind if the customer pays for the universal but I give them one that fits better.

Yes, I understood all that.  

 

The universal ones will fit just as well - IF you put the effort into getting them to fit.   It takes some time - but a lot less time than it does to order a size of the premiums one does not already have on hand.
