Magee didn't carry 349 (or even 300 for that matter) and to be honest I don't think DJ did either. Watching the hole it played 430 downhill with a 12 mph helping wind. Good drives though, no doubt about it!

The odds makers don't seem to be giving anyone but Scheffler any respect. Rory is still 9:1 after going 2 and 0, and putting on a driving display never before witnessed. I don't think he started much worse than that. And his bracket isn't that tough.

Please don't mistake my examples as any criticism of Rory's drive. It was phenomenal. An all timer. To be shown in golf highlights forever.

 

It doesn't make any difference that Magee didn't fly it 300 or 349. He made a HIO on a par 4! The only one in PGA Tour history. DJ knocked a 430 yard drive to 6". Both results were arguably better than Rory.

 

The question we will never have an answer for is would he actually buried the putt?

I swear this part of some weird Rory apology to Taylormade. "Hey guys, I screwed up last week with those comments, but I know how to fix it. Build me a shorter one of those new models so I can swing it has hard as I can and make some highlights for you. Bonus, i'll switch putters so when I putt like **** it won't look bad for the Spider X. Just pop me a $500,000 bonus if I pull it off"

Does he remain the guy who makes the most long putts in perpetuity thanks to his 2018-19 season?

They do that kinda stuff all the time, I agree its a little obnoxious. Someone becomes known for something at some point and they just get held to that for the rest of the announcers life. Viktor Hovland and his short game "oh it used to be rough but he has really turned it into strength" naw, he didn't really. He is still below PGA tour average and has never been above it statistically, partially because of consistently poor bunker play. Announcers will still talk about how DJ turned his wedge game around when it was a change that happened between 2015-2016.

That trait of theirs is annoying wrt all players but especially Spieth because his strengths and weaknesses flip around so often.

 

AFAIK his SG around the green is reasonably consistent from season to season, but his long game and putting SG stats fluctuate up and down even more bizarrely than his hairline.

This is soooo frustrating, there are playback errors on both day one and two replays on the app of the (ridiculously useless) company that has the rights to golf in Australia so I can't watch any of this.
