2023 TM P770 v. PXG 0311T

Anyone have experience comparing these two irons?  I picked up a set of P770s on a whim several weeks ago, got busy with a relocation, and never even took them out of the wrappers.  In the meantime, I made the mistake of hitting a set of 0311T (Gen 3s) and was really, really impressed.  Distance seemed similar to the p770s, but felt softer and were very consistent in both distance and direction.  I'm thinking of selling the TMs and picking up a set of Gen 3 or 4 0311Ts.  What would I be gaining (or losing) if I pull the trigger??

Only issue with Gen 3 is you will get random hot shots. The goo inside feels amazing but wasn’t as consistent as the newer goo apparently. Gen 3 is probably the softest feeling version of the irons though. P will feel softer than T, XP the softest because more goo. I’ve had Gen 2, 3, 4, and now 5. All have been real improvements.

Gen 3 T’s are one of the best irons I think PXG put out.  Such a good iron!

I had the gen 3 and gen 5. Both are great irons. I like the 5 better as it seems to be longer and still has great accuracy. I also had the Taylor made 770’s and hated them. They look spectacular but feel like you’re hitting rocks. PXG’s feel like blades with great forgiveness from the hollow core. Best irons ive ever had.

No comparisons between TM and PXG when it comes to the 770/790 line vs T and P. PXG is on another level when it comes to feel and performance….. if you get along with the wider soles… IF. I do and love my Gen5’s. Agree with posters above. Gen3 felt great, but Gen5 perform better.

I’d echo what everyone else is saying. If you like a firm feel - go Taylormade. If you like a softer feel, go PXG. If you are going with the “T”, the sole is fairly narrow but the PXGs do have a fair amount of bounce, so turf interaction may be different between the two, for you. I would also agree the Gen 5s, although not as good looking (personal opinion), they are more consistent and all around better performing compared to the Gen 3, for my game.

Thanks, all!  Seems like the Ts have a pretty good following. They certainly performed for me today.

Any love for the 770s?

Lots of love but we tend to be out numbered 🙂

I don't have significant time with the Gen3 but they certainly have a good feel by  my soft-o-meter. A club buddy got himself a set of them which was a feel upgrade over his Gen1 P790s for sure. I have not hit the T, only the P and to me I prefer the shape and size of my 770's. I am fortunate to have hot spot free set of them from TM.

The price is a no brainer and its amazing how PXG has turned into an underground value company from where they once were 😄

Did you move away from the RVA area?

I’ve played every version of the 0311T irons from 1-4. I have not hit or played Gen 5 irons yet. I tend to stay a generation behind.

The 0311T irons are fantastic. Comparable in size to iblades, T100, TCBs, etc. The feel is fantastic and distance is more than acceptable. The only knock I will put on them compared to some others is the slightly wider sole. For me, they are a little less “workable” than the T100s I have.

Once warmer weather return I’ll go back to a combo set of 0311T in 4-6 and 0211ST in 7-G.

Yeah, kind of a lot has happened in the last couple years!  I left RVA in 2018 for a job opportunity in Orlando. Moved to California last year, and absolutely hated it despite it being an amazing career opportunity. We just moved to Dallas Texas last month. Hoping to stay a while!

Welcome to Dallas!  Some great golf out here for sure.  Quite a bit different turf, but some great options.

I quickly skimmed through the thread, and didn't see anything about blade lengths. P770 is a bit bigger. It's obviously not a big iron, but the 0311T is compact. The gen 3 0311T was the same size as my 0211 ST blades. P770's are bigger. I personally think P770's launch higher as well. I personally prefer the feel of the PXG's but that's a personal thing.

I tried a set of gen 3 0311T and while I liked how they felt, the soles didn't work for me at all...everything went high and at least a club short. If you are used to thinner soles, the 0311's may not work well for you.
