Srixon Utility: Z U85, ZX, or ZX MKII?

Campbell K.

Recommended Posts

Trying to decide between utility irons.  In general, I prefer limited offset, but really enjoyed hitting a friend's Z U85 2 iron.

Seems like tour guys are split between all 3 types, perhaps with more Z U85's out there (s/o Scottie Scheffler).

Thoughts from the board?  Looking to replace my ZX7 4i head, and replace my T200 3 iron with a Tour AD shaft (flies too high).  May replicate Scottie's exact 3/4 setup.

As a player that is not a fan of overly offset irons or utilities myself,  personally like the older u65 and ZX MkII in 23* loft for 4 iron replacement.

In my opinion, these appear to have less offset and better transition to hosel from topline in 23* loft than other Srixon models listed. I can be quite particular on a certain look and lots of utilities seem to have too much offset for my preferences as loft decreases.

Oh interesting, that's good to hear.  Normally when clubs get bent strong, offset increases.  Guessing that means the offset isn't too bad?

I didn’t think it was horrible

I had both ZU85 and ZX utility and currently game the ZX utility. IMO if you just got the ZU85 you’ll have no issue what do ever. Looks good and performs better. It’s right when you compare that to the ZX utility is where you’ll fall for it for its address appearance. Way less offset more streamlined and can barely see the back muscle of the iron at address. Plus performance wise I didn’t lose anything. Both great clubs if you do get a ZU85 just don’t look at the ZX utility haha

Fair enough, lol.  Idk why I'm leaning towards the Z U85, given I know it's clunkier.

The fact that it's staying in a lot of tour players bags after now two iterations... tells me there's something special about it.

No doubt it’s a bit of a clunker but only compared to the ZX next to it and it performs. It ain’t atrocious like looking down at the DHY

One option is to buy a #2 head and bend it weak to replace the 3 you have, and a 3 to replace the 4 iron. The bending weak will reduce offset, and you'll simply need to add a tip weight or some lead tape to make up for the swingweight difference from moving lighter heads up in the rotation. They Srixon Utilities bend pretty easy.

ZX MKii 3 and 4 here. Stock Shaft on both.

Easy to hit and super long. Little too high ball flight for me.

I've had the U65, U85, and have now settled on the ZX utility. Can echo some of the previous posters sentiments. All are fantastic. The U85 is certainly a bit bulkier/busier looking. Also, seems to be a bit more offset, but it had the softest feel of the 3 IMO.

Still have the U65 in a back up role, and could easily could have stuck with it, but the ZX is just so good. More player like. No experience with the MK.

Srixon has the best utilities, and would say you simply can't go wrong with any of them.

I have the zx in the 3 and testing in the 4i. Love the 3i with a ventus black 10tx and have just recently got the 4i with a tour issue x100. The 4i has more offset than I like to see in a 4i but testing regardless to see. It hits my yardage gap so that’s a plus but need more time to see how I like it control wise and working the ball.

I’ve had the 45, 85 and currently play the ZX, all in 23 degrees. I think the ZX has a sleeker profile and is the one that more closely resembles a normal iron, and subsequently it’s the least forgiving. But still much more forgiving than the 4 iron it replaces.

ZX II appears to have gone back to the slightly larger profile with more offset.

I couldn’t agree more. I gamed the zu85 for a couple seasons but after demoing the zx I replaced my zu85 with it. The zx is the best utility iron I’ve hit. I haven’t tried the mk as I’m very happy with the zx.

I had my zu85 bent two weak and it looks and feels amazing.  Hit the ZX a long time ago but I don’t remember it feeling as soft/forged feeling as the ZU.

ZX for me. Less bulky than the u85 which is all the difference for me. 3 iron (20*) has the AD DI 105x hybrid shaft and the 4 iron (23*) matches my iron shafts. Really like them both. The 3i isn’t the longest though (compared to Ping G410 Crossover at least) but for me it fits the yardage I was hoping for.

Love mine and it has a firm place in my bag but the zx 4i doesn’t. What are your build specs?

Standard 20* loft/60* lie. 1/4” short at D3.

This is part of a larger experiment of bending my T100 irons weak to eliminate a wedge.

Havent tried the ZX II but the ZX for me was forgiving, somewhat thin, just had an annoying pingy sound for me. Like it sounded like an old metal wood. Also I prefer something slimmer to look at, especially off the turf when im trying to snag one and ride it up towards the green. Might I recommend the PXG driving iron? Its easily the least offset ive seen, very thin topline, and very forgiving. Also they are going for $159 right now on their website
