What’s the best and worst advice you’ve gotten regarding junior golf?

Best:  Don't be proud of the accomplishments in golf, it is just a game.  Be proud of who they are as a person.

 

Worst:  Not sure that I have ever gotten bad advice.

It's hard to top this. 

 

On the flip side, the danger is not bad advice. It is the advices that without context.

play AJGA as soon as you can. It’s the path to college golf

Best: Go execute your process.

 

Worst: If you play blah blah blah event with 123 power at XYZ location, then the AJGA/JGS/WAGR rankings will get to BSBSBS ranking.

Best:  Enjoy your time with your kids in golf.  They will be out of the house soon enough.

Worst:  Rankings are everything.  Division 1 or bust!

Best: A, B -Z. A is where you are Z is the goal, B is the next step. Everything between C and Y is a waste of brain space.

@kekoa actually brings up a good point. He and I play in the same circles and one thing I do remember saying was that I wished I hadn’t moved my son up into his current tour so fast even though he earned it himself through his good playing. I think my son could have benefited from playing more one day events that are available every weekend versus two day “bigger” events that are only held once or twice a month. The age thing isn’t an issue, I just want him to play more competitive non ranked events.  I feel like we’re always preparing for the next “big” event instead of working on overall development.

Another good piece of advice coming from a college coach is this:  play what you can win whether that be uskids or any other organization.  This is directed towards kids under 14.  No need to compete against full grown men when you are 13.

Play 9 hole events this summer.  36 holes are great but 9 holes don't worry about winning just game plan.  9 holes you need to get off the blocks quick.

 

He said play the course and don't worry about the other girls.

I frequently, but not always successfully, have to remind myself (and my son) to stay in the moment and enjoy it for what it is.  It's easy to get caught up in always thinking about what's next.  If my son falls short of his long terms goals, I don't want him to look back and think he did it all for nothing.  Hopefully, every step of the way he can say he loves playing golf regardless of the outcome. Often, but probably not often enough, I step back and remind myself how much fun it is to watch my son play the game and to be able to enjoy it along side of him.

I couldn't agree more.  This mindset is one of those things perpetuated by AJGA and JGS.

Best: its been said. Its a marathon not a sprint.  No rush to do a lot of the things. Its get better one day at a time approach.

for me as well on this.  Son not having a lot of tournament experience could have benefited from more one day events.  He was older in the process but who cares.  Yes, its so easy to get caught up.  Looking back he should've played more one day events especially in the summer or late spring.

 

The one day events he did play he usually placed high or won.

I agree with this too. Game is game. If your kid shows up and fires in level par, while the other kids all shoot in the 80s and it is just a laugher, it still has value. Maybe more value than a 2 week grind session for a big event, where they stress for weeks and during the event and score middle of the pack. One creates residual positive momentum (just want to go play more golf), while the other requires the "get back up off the mat, and try again" mentality. Both valuable, but I think the balance should be towards the former.
