Scotland trip help!

Recommended Posts

Hi

trying to figure out planning a Scotland trip for July 2024. Is it better to use the trip services or just book yourself? Any Recs on specific trip service companies? I obviously wanna play the old course but seems like the trip services only help you register for advanced ballot which couldn’t I do myself? Please help a newbie!

It all depends on your budget. It is doable on your own for sure. We used a company the first time and we could have done it easily. Look at this link for example then compare the same package with a company and you will pay $1,500 more for the same trip.

https://www.southbeach.co.uk/en/golf-packages/ Many of the guys here are very helpful and live there. Narrow down your must plays and how long your trip is and the guys here will walk you through. Create a simple spreadsheet and make the calls and it is pretty easy.

If you must have a guaranteed time on the Old Course then using one of the authorized agents is the best way to guarantee that. Otherwise you will have to submit a request by the advance ballot, and if you don't get in on that you'll have to try the daily ballot routes.

Using an agent is more expensive than doing it yourself but that's the price of getting a guaranteed time.

You don't mention if this is for yourself or a group. That will make a difference as well.

If they can't guarantee you a time then it is definitely not worth the extra expense.

Another vote for its not worth the expense.

We got in the advanced ballot and hit. Once we had the Old Course and one of the other St. Andrews trust courses nailed down we then built the rest of the trip around them. It is so easy- Almost every course in Scotland has a website where you can book in advance. Its also my understanding that the trip service guys dont get discounts either.

We rented a van and VRBO'd a place in St. Andrews. All online. All very easy.

It’s very easy to plan it yourself. The only drawback is not being able to get a guaranteed Old Course time. However, you gave the 48hr ballot and walk up options available. If you want to play it, just get in line early camp out and you’ll get on. The rest of the courses you can book yourself. If you have any questions, message me and I’ll help you out.

so far all the agents say they will help fill out the ballot but can’t guarantee it. So I’m wondering if that’s worth it or what I’m even paying for then

We went last year and stayed at the TOC hotel for 3 days before we moved north.  We tried the ballot all 3 days and never got it so on the last day we had guys camp out and all got on.  I did not want to do it and walked up to the New Course at 7:30 with no tee time and were off 15 min later.   Came back and played the Jubilee course after lunch and i have zero regrets not playing TOC.  You can basically walk all over the course at your leisure and i was good with that and seeing the holes you see on TV.

I might be in the minority but i will skip St Andrews on the next trip as i much enjoyed the courses north with less crowds and just as good or better.  Still need to check out the courses to the west.

What trip services have you asked?

Maybe things have changed, but some golf specific companies that arrange trips have been able to guarantee The Old Course as part of the package.

I think you need to do some more looking - they are easy to find and contact and the leading ones are pretty easy to identify.

We planned our own, twice, easy to plan courses, lodging and rental car.  Some prefer having things arranged, including drivers, etc. --- I think that's great.

But the first time we went, it was because I put in for a time with The Old Course when the submission period opened in the summer and a few months later got the email to pay up! I honestly put in on a whim, but going was an easy decision because I was never going to make the trip unless I had a time guaranteed and paying a premium for a booking agent just wasn't cost effective for us.

First trip was Dornoch area then East Fife.  Second was Ayrshire and East Lothian - the first trip was so much fun we went back the next summer.  Then COVID hit . . . went to Ireland last year because airline deals late in 2021 were terrific for summer 2022.  Now much, much, higher so we'll cool it for a couple of years and see how things look - maybe next year . . . . We loved Ireland, loved it and would love to explore it more, but for me Scotland was so great, I'd guess we'd go back there before ever going back to Ireland again.  Dream would be the ability to have 3 weeks - split between England and Scotland.

Except for my first trip 16 years ago, I've booked all of my subsequent trips myself. It's not that difficult. You just need to be methodical and detail oriented. I keep a loose leaf binder with my correspondence and tee time and lodging in confirmations and a spreadsheet with the itinerary for each day. For me, planning the trip and corresponding with the clubs and accommodations is part of the fun.

hmmmm. what courses are you looking to play?

Old Course is a tricky place to get on; so many ways but your cards need to align, the more you play it the better it gets too.

Scotland for being so small has a lot of golf!

Another vote for doing it yourself. I know 2011 was 10000 years ago, but I planned a 30 day trip on my own. It was a solo trip, but for 3 more people, I don't see it being so difficult. Yes, more planning on your part but certainly not 'harder'

Good luck, I hope you'll have a super trip! 🙂

Also agree with your second statement. However, I will say that if someone is planning/ can only get to Scotland once, then TOC is a must. On my first trip, the finale was at St Andrews and I lined up overnight and played TOC 7 times - didn't see much of the other courses. I honestly didn't think I was ever coming back and I wanted to have my 'experience/pilgrimage etc. The memories will last a lifetime. This summer will be my 4th trip, so I can afford to think along your lines.

OP noticeably absent - and apparently didn't do much real looking.

There are still authorized providers who arrange tours and guarantee The Old Course - easy to find, easy to contact, just have to pony up the $$$$ to use their services.

Hi

would you mind sharing which ones?  Thank you!

  • 1 month later...

I have an upcoming trip to Scotland, leaving in one week. We used Haversham and Baker as our booking agency and thus far, couldn't be happier. They have been excellent to work with and have made it very easy so far. They handle booking of tee times, hotels, restaurants, caddies, drivers, etc. The hotel reservations and air travel would be easy to book, but with all the different tee times I would suggest using a booking agency. Will update after the trip to review.

With a good spreadsheet and a phone and internet with email, there is no point in paying double in most cases for what you can do yourself. Saying that, we were a group of 4. With a group of 16 needing a driver, I may say different. Here is how easy it is. Book your must play courses, book your flights, book your hotels then fill in the gaps with 2nd tier courses. Look up South Beach hotel if you are looking in the west coast. Their packages include Troon, Prestwick, Western Gailes and other top tier courses and the golf is essentially at cost. All you have to worry about is your flights. Most of the hotels and B&Bs have these deals all over the country and we learned at that hotel, most of the booking agents book that exact deal then just mark it up for their profit, normally just over $1,000 PER PERSON.

not sure what to do?

The time to apply to the Links Trust for 2024 Old Course tee times is in September 2023. They will let you know in October 2023 if you get a tee time. The more flexible you are regarding days you are willing to play, the more likely you will get a tee time. If you get a tee time on TOC, you can build the rest of your itinerary around that and start booking other courses in October. If you don't get a TOC tee time, you can still plan a great trip of a lifetime and try to get on TOC using the ballot or queuing up.

not sure what to do? Is it worth an agency doing the ballot for us?

which hotels also have these packages?

As @sabram said, you will be able to enter the Advanced Lottery for an Old Course time is August. It’s a tough spot to win, because the dates and times are very limited. However, it’s definitely worth the shot. My advice would be to be as flexible as possible. The larger date and time range you give, the better your chances. IF that doesn’t work, with you being a twosome, you have a decent chance of getting the ballot if you enter every day. As @cardia10 said, buy either the 3 day unlimited golf or the 3 day advanced time and apply for the ballot each day. It’s VERY easy to enter the ballot each day on their app. If you apply 5 times as a twosome, pretty good chance you’ll make it. Worst case, if you don’t, do the walk up on your last night. If you’re one of the first ones in line, you’re virtually guaranteed of getting on. The other good thing is if you do win the ballot, they are very understanding about letting you swap a tee time you had booked for that day to another day. I’m 2 for 3 on my trips with the ballot.

Just got back from Scotland....Debated between the booking agency with guaranteed TOC tee times vs ballot. Went ballot and hit on the second attempt. From there I built the others tee times around the successful ballot hit. Only downside to the ballot is the obvious planning other golf around the waiting period. Some of the premier courses require you to pay in advance and offer no refunds. Kingsbarn however will allow you to modify your tee time if a ballot conflict occurs which offers comfort in prepaying. And Kingsbarn is a fabulous course, not as nostalgic as TOC. I would describe as the Pebble Beach of Scotland IMO. Good luck which ever route you decide!

I can only speak for Kingsbarn- and yes they will just work around what's available if any conflcit. I stayed at TOC Hotel and was told by the golf concierge that Carnoustie once booked was no refund or changes. They(Carnoustie) didnt have availability while I was there so can't validate that personally.

You need to contact the courses and ask them and don't be optimistic about the ability to simply move tee times, depending on the time of year.
