Cobra vs Srixon - Utility Iron suggestions

I was pretty set on the 2/18° ZX MKii utility iron until I recently got fitted into the King tour CB/MB iron set and thought maybe I should look into the TecUtility.  The fitter didn't carry the King TecUtility irons or Srixon Utility so I wasn't able to hit either.

I've heard great things about the Srixon but the little more compact shape of the TecUtilty, plus the success I had with the Cobra's in my fitting has me second guessing.  Another benefit of the Cobra is I can get the Hzrdus RDX shaft standard which is a shaft I'm pretty comfortable with.  I'd probably get the 3/19° version of the Cobra

I would mainly be using this as a driving iron so looking for a penetrating ball flight with lower spin.

Read a ton about the Srixon but haven't seen much around the Cobra.  Anyone have a chance to compare the two yet?

I really like the Srixon utility and it is incredibly popular for a reason, although I only have experience with the OG ZX utility, haven't played the MKii. I haven't heard much about the Cobra utility but with how successful their irons have been this year, I would assume it is borrowing some of that tech and would be a great contender, just hasn't had a ton of traction yet.

I do like the reasonable prices of the upcharge shafts for the ZX, there are less options but some great ones like the MMT 105 if you want a more steel like feel and the AD DI 95 if you want a more graphite shaft feel (has a lot of load and kick which isn't for everyone).

I don't know what your speed is like, but I would consider both in the 3 iron option.  I found there is a point of diminishing returns with utilities where I actually hit the 3 iron further than the 2 iron when I was testing.  You can always bend the Srixon strong if 19* is your sweet spot.

I have a srixon 18* on the way i'll be bending to 20* with a ADDI 95x in it.  I'll post some feedback once I recieve it as i've hit the cobra prior.

This is definitely something I’m considering. I’m about 115mph with drive fwiw. I think 19 is where I want to be.

I’ve been wanting to swing that AD DI too…

Cobra make really good stuff, it’s just not as popular for some reason. I don’t think you’ll find much performance difference in most brands. Seems like it comes down to personal preference. I’d say if you like your irons, (which are great btw) give the Cobra a go since it offers your preferred shaft.

Pretty much set on the Srixon but having a hell of a time with the shaft selection. Playing $-taper in the 4-pw (x). Ideally will get something low launch/low spin - but don’t want it as heavy as the $-tapers. Thought about the KBS TGI 100 but worried that may be too high launching. Not much interest in the stock Recoil but if that’s the route I need to go then so be it….

any thoughts on shaft for this one? I’ve never played a utility before and don’t have the fitting option so flying a little in the dark with this.

Just got back from the range and swinging the Srixon up against my current 2 iron which is a New Level NLU

The Srixon feels more solid but has a lower ball flight than the new level.   The cobra when I hit it a few weeks back i did like the look at address but it didn't feel as solid or sound as clean as the new level or the srixon.  Which could have to do with the foam filling on the Cobra.   The height difference could of been partially caused by the differnce between the two heads as well - the srixon has a Tour AD 95x and my New Level has a KBS Tour Proto 105X.

The Srixon head and the New Level are both about equaly forgiving as far as I could tell.  I played both off a short tee and off the deck as a comparison.   I found the srixon easier to hit right to left versus my current which was a nice change.  Off the deck the Srixion was easier to hit as it's a litte thinner I think from front to back.   I'll be intersted to hit both off grass once the ranges open up completely to verify what I saw off a mat this afternoon.

Best looking at address was definitely the New Level , it has a thinner topline and less off set than the Srixon.  I may have the Srixon bent two degrees weak to get rid of some offset and cut down a touch to play more as a 3 iron substitute versus my New Level.

I think my New Level will be staying in the bag for courses with longer Par 4's and tighter shorter courses I think the Srixon would be a perfect fit for at 20*.

I also have a Srixon ZU utility head in a Tour AD 95x that I've played in the past and the difference between the ZU and the MKii was really minimal to me - if you have an older model and your happy with it i don't see a reason to change.

Hey, I wonder if could share some more thoughts on how the two shafts compare. I’ve been looking at both for a srixon 2 iron

The 105x is no joke - you can’t really lay off that shaft or it can produce some weird results and ball flights.   I don’t know what your speed is but I’m around 118-120 with a driver.  When loaded properly the shaft makes a really nice mid ball flight with decent manageable spin - this is a tee club for me so I don’t care about holding greens with it.   I’ve hit it off the deck on the course maybe twice and use it for punch outs all the time.   In hindsight the 95x may be the best shaft for me in the KBS line but I don’t mind the 105 when I’m swinging well.

The Tour AD shaft produces a lower flatter ball flight for me than the KBS with comparable spin.  It’s definitely easier to load and you don’t have to swing 100% to produce playable ball flights and shot shapes.

Not sure if I am in time or not, but would recommend the PXG Driving iron. Unfortunately I am not getting paid to promote this although you can see from my past posts im really selling it, but its the best DI ive had. I've been looking for a solid DI for 2 years now and this one hits all the marks. Ive been through at lest 5 now, the ZX, T200, Mizuno hifli, NLU-01, HMB, and now PXG and with the new sale price, could not recommend more.

ZX Mkii on the left. King Tec on the right.  These are in the 4i.   Felt the Cobra was a bit softer, but yet a little faster.

Liked the Cobra performance and feel a bit better, but would put the ZX a little ahead in terms of looks.

Got my Cobra 4i out on the course yesterday. Hit it four times off the tee. So far I'm super impressed. Dead straight missiles despite it being a windy day. The flight is a nice in between where it's nice off the tee, but I wouldn't be scared of hitting it on a par 5 approach either. The feel is also great btw.

I went 4/4 hitting fairways, distance was in the 230 range.

The bigger question is, why post this here? It's a question of comparing 2 specific utility irons, not which of the dozens out there do you prefer. It always astounds me when we think that our opinion matters so much that it must be shared even when it doesn't contribute to the conversation. Don't worry, I know I've done it, too.

@jgreer1421 Thanks for the photo! I love my cobra irons, but I am also someone who is compelled by looks. I have to agree that at address the ZX has a better look! That thinner profile just sells it. I don't have a utility in my bag, but have to admit I'm interested now!
