Played 12 holes with my Ping Eye 2s this morning…

Recommended Posts

Before my health problems got the best of me, I would drag my original 1983 Eye 2's out once a month.  These are the same clubs that helped me card my lowest competition round ever and still hold a fond place in my heart.  It's very true that Ping made the perfect iron with these and while technology has changed, these are still as good now as they were then.

Glad you enjoyed your day.

I'd wager that I could take my current driver, add in my 1-LW BeCu Eye 2's & my manganese bronze Anser 2 and average within 2 shots of my current scoring average.  Perhaps even closer.

Yes, I those wedge grinds fit me well and yes, I believe iron tech in that segment of club (player's cavity by today's standards) has changed that little.

Drivers obviously have changed quite a bit more since 1983.....

Well said and I agree 100%.

Do you guys swap back and fourth between blades and the eye 2s?  I'd like to add a set of eye 2s to my rotation but I wonder if I would be messing up my blade feel.

Lol, I swap back and forth with EVERYTHING!

Seriously though, I have 3 sets that get play thoughout the year:

1. My main "competition" set.  This one gets about 80% of my rounds and has all the latest (maybe not totally latest, like up to the minute) and greatest tech.  See my signature for WITB.

2. My 1/2-walking-vintage set.  PING Eye 2 woods, Tommy Armour 986 irons, Cleveland OG 588 wedges.

3. My left handed set.  PING G2 driver, Callaway X-22 irons, PING Eye 2 wedges.

At no point does playing with one set seem to adversely affect playing with the others.  In fact, I would argue the opposite.  The variety in the skills that I'm working on with the two non-competition sets can only be beneficial for when I'm playing with the main set, IMHO.

Long story medium, just get some Eye 2's.  You won't regret it!

I need to get a set.  I have a set my grandfather was gifted at retirement, who my father inherited and sadly died young.  They still have the original Ping man grips on them.  I played them once about 3 years ago but had some concern about leaving a club behind or mental back and forth on pulling the old grips.  One of my buddies said, "your dad and grampa aren't coming back for them."  Maybe I should just go ahead and start peeling those grips.

If both were here in earth today…would they be happier seeing you out golfing w the clubs in the closet or seeing you out golfing w those clubs?

Get some custom printed name/address/telephone number/email labels for the shafts in case they are lost, you might get someone to contact you.

some nice new grips and get out there.

the grips are not doing the clubs any favors, you are a golfer not a collector, pull them get new ping grips and play themn, and yes they will look like shovels compared to your blades but they are so nice if you can get past the look

  • 3 weeks later...

I visited my mom over the weekend and checked out the Eye 2s in the basement.  They are UGLY at address and super light just waggling them in the basement.  Maybe later this summer I'll visit them again.  So much offset I still cant uncross my eyes from looking down on those!

Many years ago, Ping was selling off (through a dealer maybe?) Ping Eye 2 "refurbished" irons. I took the leap and received a like-new set of Eye 2s. What I found out soon was they were the Eye 2 + no + irons; 3-PW. New Ping Grips and perfect finish. Shafts were ZZ Lite. I played them for 2 seasons and shot my lowest ever round - 6 over. Feeling so good about myself and my skill as a golfer, I sold them and picked up a new set of Mizuno MP-22s. I hit those well on the range, watched my index blow up on the course. Selling those Pings? Without a doubt the dumbest thing I have ever done re. golf equipment. Sheer stupidity. No other way to explain it. Still haunts me to this day. :classic_sad:

I agree.   I have two sets.  One is a regular 3-pw with ZZ lite shafts and one is a BeCu 1-sw (that I may have overpaid for) with the microtaper shafts but both sets are a blast to play with.  Do I hit them as well as my i210s, no.  But I'm a "Ping guy" and hitting the BeCu flush is almost a religous experience.

When I play in the large, full-course scrambles, I see Ping Eye2 irons being played here and there.

And, occasionally the player is a 20-something!

Loft for loft, they are still as good as most irons out there. I would love to see Askgolfnut or Crossfield do a head to head with an Eye2 7 iron vs a g425 8 iron +1/4” and see what the dispersion numbers are. I would bet it’s not that much.

As I get older and slowing down a little, I have started experimenting with other clubs....always played blades previously so have started looking for a bit more help and ended up with a full set of Ping G series irons.

However, I also have a set of ping eye 2, ping eye 2 Becu and ping zing 2. I have played many rounds here in the UK since October using only a half set in my minimalist bag and found them great once adjusting to distances compared to the newer G irons.

What I have noticed is the amount of people that have stopped me and spoke to me about the clubs in my bag, especially the eye 2 Becu's. People of all ages want to look at them and the older gentleman all say the same thing....."best irons I ever had, should never have sold my old Eye 2's.
