  • 18majors changed the title to 2023 DIO IMPLANT LA OPEN, March 30 - April 2

@AKL Kiwi

I'm interested in how World #1 Lydia Ko will perform; fresh out of her Hawaii vacation.  What do you think?

She played well at this course last year, T3.  This was where she had that now famous encounter with Jerry Foltz:

Lydia Ko praised for talking about period after surprising reporter with honest answer

Could have sworn she said that the event Marina Alex won.

You should have highlighted last year Yealimi finished T10, her best mark of the season!

Yes, it's called 2022 Palos Verdes Championship played at Palos Verdes Golf Club; Marina Alex won, Jin Young solo second and Lydia T3 with Megan Khang.

No, Yealimi shot +7 and missed the cut at Palos Verdes Golf Club.

Yealimi finished T10 at 2022 DIO LA Open that's played at Wilshire Country Club the week before Palos Verdes, where Nasa Hataoka won.

Another top full field tournament. I expect the winner will receive 62 RR points. Hopefully Lydia got some R&R last week and is fresh to go again. I have no idea who's week it will be. Last week's form players who underperformed and missed the cut were Stark, Lexi, Aditi, Brooke and Buhai. DK was not well and Nelly had an ordinary tournament. Brooke and Lexi are off this week and Vongtaveelap who looked so good a few weeks ago was poor again in the qualifier so the Vare Trophy is safe in her hands for at least another week!

Five Things To Know About the DIO Implant LA Open

Nasa HataokaNasa Hataoka of Japan poses for photos with DIO Implant LA Open Trophy after winning in the final round of the DIO Implant LA Open at Wilshire Country Club on April 24, 2022 in Los Angeles, California.

Written By: Kikue Higuchi

Kikue Higuchi is a journalism student at Northwestern University and an intern at the LPGA.

The LPGA will stay in the West for its second full-field event of the season, the DIO Implant LA Open. The tournament will celebrate its fifth anniversary on the tour with a new course and a strong field that promises excitement.

Another Stacked Field

The best golfers in the world will tee off on Thursday at the DIO Implant. And that’s no exaggeration. After skipping the LPGA Drive On Championship last week, Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings No. 1 Lydia Ko is back on tour for the Southern California event. She is joined by No. 2 Nelly Korda, No. 3 Jin Young Ko and No. 4 Atthaya Thitikul. Korda and Jin Young have both had long runs as World No. 1 and are eager to make their way back to the top – making for high stakes at this week’s event for those atop the Rolex Rankings.

A New Home

The DIO Implant LA Open’s inaugural playing in 2018 marked the LPGA Tour’s return to Los Angeles in more than a decade and has been the tour’s staple event in Southern California ever since. After four years at Wilshire Country Club, the tournament will move to the Palos Verdes Golf Club, which hosted the Palos Verdes Championship presented by Bank of America in 2022. The par 71 course is often referred to as a “hidden gem” and boasts beautiful ocean views of Santa Monica Bay.

Two Defenders

Since the tournament has found a new home at a former event’s stomping grounds, there are two “defenders” to watch out for this week. The DIO Implant LA Open’s official defending champion is No. 12 Nasa Hataoka, who won by a whopping five strokes for her sixth LPGA Tour victory. However, the last player to win at the Palos Verdes Golf Club was Marina Alex, who won the Palos Verdes Championship by a single stroke over Jin Young. The win was just her second on tour after a four-year drought. Both players will look to recreate the success they found at this event and on this course over the weekend.

California Connections

Whenever the tour takes a trip to sunny Southern California, some players get to spend a few days at home. This week, there are 20 Los Angeles natives, residents, or both competing at the Palos Verdes Country Club. Lilia Vu, a Los Angeles native and resident, will play in front of a home crowd for the first time as an LPGA Tour winner after her victory at the Honda LPGA Thailand just over a month ago. Other California natives that will enjoy a home-field advantage include Danielle Kang, Andrea Lee and Lizette Salas.

First Home Tournament

But this event will be the sweetest for rookies like Lucy Li and Gabriella Then. Both are California natives and residents who will be getting the chance to play in front of a home crowd for the first time as full-fledged LPGA Tour members. The last time Li played on the LPGA Tour in Southern California, she finished T22 at the LPGA MEDIHEAL Championship in 2022. Just the second full-field event of the season, the DIO Implant LA Open has attracted 24 of the Tour’s 31 rookies.

Not related to this week; but great news nonetheless:

LPGA quickly fills open spot in 2023 schedule with new event in Malaysia

In retrospect, LPGA forced Taiwan to admit its pretention because they already had something better in their back pocket.  The Fall Asian swing now has a total purse of $9.3 million, I bet even Nelly Korda will make the trip!

"The Maybank tournament will be the third of four events LPGA’s fall Asian swing, following a stop in South Korea and a week ahead of a visit to Japan. It will have a field of 78 players competing over 72 holes with no cut and a $3 million prize money payout."

Hmm dubbing this a "home game' for a Lucy Li is strange since she is from NorCal, not SoCal. If the LPGA played an event in Albany,NY I wouldn't refer to it as a home game for Annie!

Thanks for the clarification, that is confusing!  Even better for Annie who finished t5 last season on this course. She is currently #1 ranked in strokes gained putting on the season, the long putter is 🔥

Are there any other players on tour who use the long putter ?

It looks like Minjee Lee isn't going to play again until she learns how to put again, LOL!  She's only played like one tournament this year it seems like.

My field rating for this tournament is an excellent 77% (up from 71% last year).

The field will be led by the top four players in the world:
Lydia Ko
Nelly Korda
Jin Young Ko
Atthaya Thitikul
Sixteen of the top 20 players from the this weeks Rolex World Rankings will be in attendance.

Players skipping the event this week include:
Brooke Henderson
Minjee Lee
Lexi Thompson
Celine Boutier
Anna Nordqvist
Linn Grant

There was some major movemnet in the Rolex Rankings this week as:
Celine Boutier made the most important move jumping from 14-8.
Georgia Hall vaulted from 22-13.
Other noteable moves included Ally Ewing 39-35, Hae Ran Ryu 53-46, and Narin An 65-49.
We had two players jumping back into the top 100 this week:
Jenny Shin 101-96
Emily Kristine Pederson 103-98
Jin Hee Im and Bronte Law fell out of the top 100, and are no longer part of my field rating.
Outside of the top 100, Stacy Lewis leaps up from 143-110.

Jin Young Ko's top ten finish this past weekend was her third of the season. She joins Nelly Korda and Ashleigh Buhai for the LPGA lead in that category.

Actually she's played in two, the HSBC and the Honda. Her best finish was T52 in the no-cut events. Her putting has been dreadful, though.
